I have a 5160 with an IBM CGA Card in it. I'm trying to find the best way to go from CGA to VGA.

The options I've seen seem to be...

MCE Adapter By Necroware with the GBS 8200

RGBtoHDMI – 6-bit TTL Edition - On TEXELEC

EternalCRT - Monotech

Does anyone have experience with these...or maybe other ideas?

what is your target display device, a VGA PC CRT?

RGBtoHDMI are great...but doesn't convert to VGA. It goes straight CGA to HDMI.

My MCE2VGA (texelec used to have similar) always had some slight random pixel noise....but it does work. Never connected it to a CRT though. Not sure if the Necroware MCE is better? It looks like a completely different design, so hopefully better?

Rgbtohdmi works great, but "problem" it has is that it takes seconds to change modes.
So when you start game and the action starts immediately you need to hit pause if the game has it, so that rgbtohdmi has time to sync to that new video mode, then everything works perfectly.

Does the RGBtoHDMI one upscale the resolution or does it keep it the same?

I do like the EternalCRT for it's various features but it's a seems a bit pricey.
That's why I was considering the MCE Adapter By Necroware with the GBS 8200.

I would describe my RGBtoHDMI as being scaled to the output resolution with respect to aspect.

RGBtoHDMI upscales, and does a very good job of it too.

But it is NOT the right choice to convert to VGA for use with a VGA CRT.

I know, I was more just curious if I ever chose to use it for another system.

For this particular one I'm between the EternalCRT and the MCE.

The Eternal has a case, on screen controls and a composite display option. But costs double what the MCE does with shipping.
The MCE comes as a kit you solder together and would need a case.

I'm willing to pay the extra amount but I want to know that it's worth it.

rgb2hdmi cost isnt too bad the, the cpld was the most expensive part. Also assuming you order cheapest pcb's.

I'm amazed how much engagement is put into not using an ISA VGA card or IBM CGA's composite output.
If both real VGA and NTSC artifact graphics are unwanted, how about using a Graphics Gremlin? 🙂

This isn't about not wanting a certain card like a VGA one but rather trying to match a particular build as closely as possible.
The very first computer I ever played games on was a 5160 with a CGA card using the 9pin connector.
