I'm trying to get a network game in the game Screamer to work. First I want to try it with Windows XP with Dosbox and Windows 98.

How can I setup a IPX network between them? Windows 98 does not recognize the commands IPXNET.

Thanks in advance!

That's because IPXNET is in the world of DOSBox only. If you're looking to do native IPX passthrough, check out hal's DOSBox mega build and follow the instructions to set up IPX support in Windows XP (it requires a passthrough driver). From there you'll also have to obtain and set up LSL + Ne2000 + ipxodi TSR drivers, which I can't provide atm but hal could

I've downloaded the 'Native IPX' exe file and the dlls. I've placed them in the dosbox folder. Is that all or is there something I need to do (except running the line 'ipxnet startni')?

ask hal as it is his code. Not "officially" supported here

I want to set-up a network game between a Windows XP and a Windows 98 computer.

I've followed the staps of this page: http://home.arcor.de/h-a-l-9000/ (Novells IPX) but I'm still unable to play, I'm waiting in a room but the other does not show up.

I have a macfilter on my router, must I first add the macadress in the router?

They can see each other with the ping and file sharing. They are on the same workgroup 'thuis'.

There is no ping and dns with IPX/SPX. AFAICR, there's not even file sharing (between DOS clients). That's Novell networking for you. (; I used to run Netware at home, and had much "fun" with it.

Anyway, Jappie, there seems to be a misunderstanding here. Vanilla DOSBox does not support "real" IPX. It's using a IPX over TCP (or UDP, i think) implementation. This means you can't connect DOSBox to a "real" IPX network. I don't know about hal's build, though. Setting up IPX in DOS is not an easy thing to do. You need to start a sh*tload of drivers, and they take up much conventional memory.

It'd much easier if the other machine was running DOSBox (and TCP/IP networking), too. But the other machine is probably not the fastest one, i assume - otherwise it wouldn't run Windows 9x. DOSBox should run in Win9x, but it'll be slow.

There's no real solution to your problem, i think. Either hal's build really does support "real" IPX networking (then you're in for a lot of configuring), and you can use that, or you'll have to connect to a faster machine running DOSBox.

EDIT: hal's "Megabuild" indeed does support "real" IPX in DOSBox. See his website for instructions.

I have thought about running DosBox on the Windows 98 machine, but I first wanted to try it natively.

And yes, it should work. But with me it doesn't. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I will now try to get DosBox to work on the Windows 98 machine (that should be less difficult...).

Indeed. And now that you (and we) know what you are trying to do, it will be easier to assist you.

Doesn't look to me like you've read hal's instructions. There's a lot of commands to be executed in hal's DOSBox build, and "ipxnet" is not one of them.

Just to make that clear: if you want to connect DOSBox to a "real" DOS machine, you'll need the following:
- The DOS machine must be configured correctly (IPX running, all Novell drivers running) - a working "ping" command to that machine via TCP/IP (in Win9x) does not necessarily mean it's running IPX correctly (TCP/IP and IPX/SPX are different protocols). If you exit Win9x to the command prompt, all IPX-related drivers have to be loaded at the command prompt, too
- The XP machine must have IPX (and probably the Netware client, but i'm not sure about that) configured correctly and running
- DOSBox on the XP machine must have all the IPX-related drivers running (see hal's instructions)

Oh, there's another small knack: wasn't there a compatibility problem between the Windows XP IPX implementation and the "original" one? I think there were some threads on VOGONS about that problem.

No, it doesn't work... 😢 The Windows 98 computer is much to slow. (it's an Toshiba 320CDT with 32,0 mb RAM)

I will try it with another Windows 98 computer with 64,0 mb RAM, but first I will try it out with another XP computer.

The old 'Native IPX' file is not the right one for this purpose.

Yes!!!! It's working with two Windows XP computers! Now I will install it on a other Windows XP Computer, and I will try DosBox on the 64,0 mb Windows 98 Machine.

You need the 'Megabuild'. That response was before reading your e-mail though which implies you already have the right build.

I don't know if this patch works with wireless networks. The DOSBox instance is like an additional computer on the network so you probably have to add it to the macfilter.

I have the 'Megabuild'. I will try it, adding the mac address. Otherwise it won't work and I must do it with the Windows XP computers with IPXNET.

It doesn't work... Now I don't know anything I can do.
