It's pretty odd that there's no USB settings in the CMOS. If the ports are functional, they ought to show up in Device Manager as USB or as an unknown device that needs a driver. Do you have the most up to date BIOS?

Could you post a pic of your board?

It could be that the usb pins aren't in the same order as the bracket you are using.
Use a multimeter to check.

Hang on, incorrect pinout can cause devices not to be detected, but your USB root hub should be detected regardless. This motherboard has a Via VPX chipset. Did you install Via chipset drivers? If not, start there. Via still has them online (4-in-1 4.35), so does Phil's Computer Lab.

Be aware Win98FE is almost as limited as Win95 when it comes to USB. SE would be a lot better - but there you still need chipset drivers.

Some possibilities: you actually have a PM 8600A (double check), you have a PM 8600B with a PM8600A BIOS installed, or maybe you have the earliest BIOS for the board and they didn't include USB support in the initial release. Or maybe the board is old and flaky and the USB is non functional.

Copy that dionb, will check the drivers and install them. I also have those four files for usb support for Windows 95 somewhere on some diskette. Will try that too.

The BIOS string indicates that you have the correct BIOS for a PM 8600B, so if you have verified that your board is a -B then you have the correct BIOS. But there is a later BIOS and I wouldn't be surprised if it enables or enhances the USB functionality of your board. The first revision of the board shipped with non functioning USB ports, and in the summer of 1997 needing USB ports was still a far off thing for most. What shows up in Device Manager now? You should see either a USB hub or at least one unknown device.

Yes, version of the board is 5.5, this was clear from the beginning before I posted this issue. I see, so I have the first bios from those two bioses available for this board. I haven't tried those drivers dionb suggested, so I haven't gotten anywhere yet. Drivers are downloaded, all I have to do is put 'em on diskettes and try 'em. For which I will have space tomorrow. Will keep you informed.
