HI, I recently bought a "Roland CM-32LN" on an auction as junk and when i connected it didn't sound correct. Sounded like an SC-55 or similar.

I tried some games that make use of the CM-32L sounds and i got no sounds so I thought that maybe the rom was patched or there was some malfunction. I opened it and surprise! It seems somebody put a roland SCC-1 it seems, with a maybe daughterboard? and lot of patches.

Could somebody identify what could it be? Now i have an external, battery powered SCC-1? (it even works with the 6x batteries installed)
Could I use it for something? I have already an sc-88 so i do not really need it but I am aware that the SCC-1 card is very expensive (if it is). I am upset because i wanted a cm-32ln very bad, but at the same time I'm amazed for the "engineering".

it seems someone really wanted to have some sc55-like to their PC98...
so they ditched the original innards (mpu interface + LA board) replaced the mpu interface with a butchered SCC-1 and replaced the scc-1 onboard synth with that daughterboard (probably from some keyboard?)
keep this as a curio , everything is way gone at this point so restoration is almost impossible...

holy carp, this is some butchering that has been done there 😳

But yeah, it doesn't seem like it can be restored in any easy way...

I don't think so, this is definitely a hackjob of different generations of parts that Roland did not have to put together to get a SC55 mk2 equivalent going on. CM32LN with SCC1 (essentially SC55mk1) butchered to become a SC55mk2 using parts from a NEC PC expansion card, and copious amount of hotsnot 🤣

Wow, what a crazy hack job! Honestly, if it works without problems it's quite impressive for someone to have done that back in the day before you could just google pinouts and such.

It's too bad it isn't what you were looking for, but wow is it unique. I would add a custom sticker to the front that says CM-55mkII and either keep it as part of your collection (would look awesome stacked with a proper one) or move it on to someone who can make use of one like that.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.
