Hi, guys! I've managed to get my hand on this board, I've just updated to the latest bios, 7k, hoping I could use my Tualatin 1.2Ghz CPU but I'm afraid it's not supported, right? It posts just fine with the CPU that came with, a Celeron 466, but I wanted to make it work with this one as well. Can I do anything about it? Like modding the bios somehow. Or I have to find another CPU, 1.1Ghz, 100 FSB, because this is what Abit states on the latest update. Thank you!

The Tualatin is FCPGA2 and your board is FCPGA so it's a little trickier than just slotting it in and hoping the BIOS will support it because it's a matter of pin arrangement.

As for the 1.1GHz, the BIOS notes say 1.1GHz Celeron so make sure it's a Celeron not a Coppermine.

Btw, the absolute latest BIOS (YZ) does say it adds Coppermine support but it's extremely vague:

Mine is a Celeron SL86P Tualatin which I thought it would work. Anyway, I've bought another one SL5ZE which I think it will work. I can't download the latest bios, the link seems to be dead. I've already updated to 7K version which fixed my ram issue. The Celeron at 1.1Ghz is a Coppermine while the other is a Tualatin, I think this is the issue. I think this motherboard is okay, no faulty caps sa far.

Don't expect any Tualatin or Tualatin-256 processor (SL68P & SL5ZE) to work in this board, even with the latest BIOS. For reference see... https://web.archive.org/web/20011109055440id_ … /2001101103.htm

Okay, I've just figured out that the other one is a Tualatin as well. I will have to look for a Coppermine one. Thank you!

Sorry for barging onto this thread, but I am also in the process of replacing my Asus CUV4X motherboard(having weird issues with the PS/2 ports). I have an offer for a Abit Vl6 on ebay. It is a bit on the more expensive side of things for my taste but I want a 370 socket motherboard for the P3 SL3xY Processor(133 MHz) I have.

Do you know if my processor will work with your motherboard?

Also how has your experience been so far with this board. I plan to make a Win 95 build with my system.

If you do decide to switch to the VL6 then yes, your processor will work - the board supports 133MHz coppermines to at least 1GHz. Also, if the board isn't on the latest BIOS version (7K), consider updating it... https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/abit-ab-vl6#bios

Thanks for that info. I think I will most probably will go with this board unless I get a better offer on a Soyo/Tyan.

I think this is relevant to the thread. However the new Abit motherboard does not give a display with my Intel P3 SLXXY. The cpu fans spin up and it seems the power goes through, but no display. I have even bought an XGECU T48 to flash the eeprom, but I still get no display. I am not sure if reflashing the BIOS with the 7k bios destroyed the eeprom. It could also be that there was never Coppermine support on the board.

I have a VL6 and it supports Coppermines - mine used to run an 866MHz Coppermine Pentium 3 before going into storage.

Just to clarify, that particular CPU worked with your Asus board?

Yes, not only did it work for me but I even installed Win 95 OSR 2.1 with it. I made a thread about how I got PS/2 KB/mouse issues with that board. So I ditched it. Here is my CPU pic from the ebay seller.

Do you remember which BIOS was on it and what is the latest BIOS? There is conflicting info on whether YZ or 7k is the latest bios. Also as per AI(very dubious source) the BIOS files might not have the microcode for my CPU.

Edit: I am new to this but I learnt how to use MCE from chatgpt. As per the AI source, apparently the 7k BIOS does not have the microcode for my P3 coppermine(068A)

7K is the latest, dated 2002, and it did POST properly with my 866 Coppermine.

1. Award BIOS has two methods for storing microcode.

- Uncompressed — in some BIOS sections, used for newer platforms like AM2/3. In this case, the microcode is executed before the main BIOS loads.

- Compressed — in the CPU CODE module. Compressed microcode is invisible to MCE.

Re: AB-BH6 CPU help

I did some more digging around and also played around with biospatcher. It seems SL3XY has microcode 0683 which IS there in the 7k BIO.(dunno for sure)

However if the SL3XY did not have the 0683 code, then maybe it is not supported. I have attached the 7k bios as biospatcher shows it.

The attachment biosSL3XY.png is no longer available

Edit: Right now the only 2 possibilities are the eeprom is bad and the bios is not getting through. The motherboard caps might be bad.

Edit2: It seems even the yz version of the bios has the support for 683. Weird

The microcodes are outdated, but they exist.

Yeah, it seems 7k should support the SL3XY. I also found even the older versions had support for 0683 code cpus. I dunno why I do not get the POST. The CPU fans do spin and even the GPU fans(both PCI/AGP gpus work) spin. However there is no output on the screen.

What is also weird is that the CMOS jumper pin was set to the pin 1-2 when I received the motherboard. Removing it to Pin 2-3 results in the CPU fans not spinning.

Edit: Mobo pic for reference.

Buy a capacitor ESR meter.
If I had a dollar for every time they said the capacitors were in good condition, I'd buy a Voodoo 3.
