I was searching for icons to use on my Doom shortcuts in Windows 98 and came across this UseNet post from 1996 on The Doom Help Service website (quoted below for posterity). In the post, five files are provided as UUdecoded text. I didn't see these specific icons posted anywhere on that site or others, including in Mister Xiado's awesome Oldternet icon packs, so I thought it would be fun to write a script to decode them. I was able to generate the individual 1KB icons as well as the 5KB DLL. They are attached below if anyone wants them. I love the quaint note about using the DLL to reduce wasted allocated disk space.

Many of you will have UUdecoded and installed the DooM icon from the Doom Help Service files. I did, and to my mind the version given there is too "fussy" -- it has a very cluttered background, and no transparency information.
Based on this icon, I have designed my own versions which I hope people will like. The attached files are:

DOOM.ICO DooM logo on transparent b/g -- for DooM 1/Ultimate
DOOM2.ICO Guess! -- for DooM II
DOOM-WAD.ICO Logo on maze -- for .WAD files

By the way, if you have a HUGE hard drive as I do, I recommend the DLL as this is far more economical of drive space. The .ICO files take 1KB of *logical* file space (i.e. the disk occupied by the file) but, on a 1-and-a-bitGb drive, 32KB of *physical* space (the portion of disk allocated to the file).
