Hmm. Not having much luck getting Windows 98 set up in 86Box. 🙁 It complains the CPU is unworkable or has been changed. And every time I try to boot from the 98 disc image, it just says Disk Boot Failure. I've tried playing with the different controllers, but nothing seems to work. I can't even access FDISK or it doesn't believe it exists.

Check PhilsComputerLabs latest video. It might help.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I've also installed PCem to try if it fails.

Right...!

Everything's set up and good to go with 86Box. Now to test the game's installer and see what happens.

Bingo. Okay, so it does indeed do the same thing on 86Box with 256MB RAM. I lowered it down to 16MB and the error goes away. 😁 So yeah, like I said previously, I would have to look at swapping out the RAM for something much lower. I'll see how high I can take the RAM first before the error comes back. And I'll try installing it with the bare minimum RAM and then see if the game can be played with 256 again.

Only problem I'm having now is getting past this error when trying to play it...

Okay, crisis averted. Those runtime errors were because I hadn't added the Soundblaster to my autoexec.bat file. 😁 The game loaded up fine. So yeah, looks like I'll either need to get a small memory module for any games with similar issues, or - I find an alternative memory capper.

Very interesting. Thanks to this thread, and specifically this post - Re: Limit DOS RAM memory (XMSDSK / HimemX / JemmEx), DOS RAM size limit - if I disable OS/2 Onboard memory > 64M... although I think it comes under something different for me. I think it's OS Select for DRAM > 64MB Non-OS2/OS2...? and then use the LIMITMEM tool - http://lonecrusader.x10host.com/rloew/limitmem.html - it does appear to adjust the total amount of (physical) memory in DOS. I've taken it down to 32MB and 16MB.

Sadly however, the error still happens.

Bingo! Hopefully... Just tried the option Memory Hole 15M-16M and that fixes the issue! Even if no memory limit is applied and it's using 256MB. 😁

Surprised no one brought that to my attention, to be honest.

Now, that option is available on my 86Box config, but I'm not sure if it's present on my actual PC. I presume it will be though.

Also, setting things back to default and having the full amount of RAM doesn't affect loading up the game after it's installed. 😀

Ok, I bring to your attention that nothing on your screenshots proofs that your really restricted your memory to 16M.

I probably didn't. But it doesn't matter. The important thing is I found an option that can be toggled in the BIOS that helps get around the issue.

And what will you do on the system without such option?

It won't be on another system. The system in question is the system. And I bought this particular motherboard for it's range of options and higher FBS and CPU clock speeds.

And you waited that people have to now how to solve problem of memory limiting on the system instead of just the memory limiting nonetheless?

I'm sorry, what is your problem, exactly? I was trying to find a workaround for the issue and was asking for suggestions/advice. The things suggested didn't work for me (it happens. A lot), but I managed to find something that did. Problem solved.
