Hi guys, I've spent a lot of time putting my collection of DOS games on a Raspberry Pi Zero2W that runs RetroPie with DOSBox svn. With RetroPie there is no gui desktop and everything runs in a framebuffer. I like this setup because it's very small and easy to carry back and forth to work so I can play a little during lunch. All of my games work well including Build engine games such as Blood and Shadow Warrior.

My only problem is the QDOS port of Quake. It runs at 320x200 but is a little too choppy to be playable. The .conf is set for pentium_slow, 63mb ram, max cycles, and svga_s3. I also have the Q2DOS port of Quake2 running at 320x200 with the same .conf settings. It is a little slow but is better and playable. The main difference I see is Quake2 is using vesa but I don't think Quake1 has vesa options.

Does anyone know QDOS well enough to have any tips to boost performance just a little? I'm not using ogg music and have tried lowering sound quality to 11000.

Why would you use the QDOS port of Quake instead of the original DOS version...

It's impressive that so much runs on dosbox in Pi, but you can get good ports of quake etc directly for the Pi, maybe there are options that'll give you the same convenience
