Assistance installing Lords of the Realm

Motherboard: Not sure, but the computer is a Dell XPS 420
Processor type and speed: Intel Core Duo E6850 @ 3MHz
Amount and type of RAM: 3 GB (not sure what is meant by type)
Video board w/ RAM amount and type: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (RAM amount and type is not listed in my device manager)
Sound board: It just says High Definition Audio Device/Controller
Operating system: Windows Vista
Game name (and version, if applicable): Lords of the Realm (first CD of the Lords Royal Collection - it is labeled MS-DOS)
Description of problem: Cannot install the program
Reproducibility of problem: always
Sound mode used: None, just trying to install at this point
Video mode: None, just trying to install
Version of emulator: DOSBox 0.72
Steps already attempted to solve the problem:

1. Autoplay will run in Vista, but when I click install (the only option given by the autoplay screen) the cursor gives the thinking graphic (circular motion next to pointer) for ten seconds and then nothing happens.
2. When I run setup.exe directly in Vista I get the same thinking graphic then nothing. This occurs even if I run it with administrator privileges.
3. When I mount the CD as D in DOSBox and run autoplay.exe, I am told that "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."
4. When I run setup.exe off the mounted CD, I get "Illegal command: win."

So far, I have not found a way to install the program in either Vista or DOSBox and I am not a DOSBox newbie, I have successfully installed Daggerfall and Wizardry in DOSBox and I use .conf files for each. Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

You can copy the game out of the \Files\ directory of the disc, but the game refuses to play as it does not recognize its own CD. I have resorted to running the DOS version under another emulator (DOSEMU) for the time being.

Thanks for the information. I tried running setup in Windows 95 compatibility mode, but I still get no love. I am going to try and pull the DOS files out of the files directory. My guess is that my chances are slim.

It is only the Collection installer that has problems on XP/Vista. Copy everything on the CD except the DIRECTX and AUTORUN directories to a folder on your HDD. Download and unzip the original Lords CD DOS installer files from my site into the same folder, overwriting any Collection installer files. Mount a "C:" drive and this folder as your CD drive in DOSBox. Run the setup in the folder mounted as the CD in DOSBox.

So I tried this. I created c:\lordsCD and loaded all the CDROM files except those two folders into it. I then downloaded the zip and extracted into the same C:\lordsCD folder. I ran DOSBox and the following commands:

mount c: games *i have a games directory in DOSBox with Dagger and Wizardry subdirectories*
mount d: c:\lordsCD -t cdrom
d:
setup

The setup program ran and I was not sure which soundcard to pick. I tried soundblaster and it did not accept that choice. I eventually tried internal, which worked. I picked c: as the installation drive. Installation then ended.

I looked at the various .exe's and picked Lords. I had no sound and my mouse did not show up on the screen (I tried various ctrl-F10's). I then tried Lordscd.bat. Still no soundm, but now my mouse showed up on the screen. After I started a game up I could not click on england and get an actual location - No matter where I put the mouse it was always "Abroad" and when I clicked I got unmarked grassland. In addition, all the flags were in the upper left hand corner, not on the counties. Weird. But at least I have gotten somewhere, so I will keep trying. Thanks for the help.

I noticed that there were some 0 sized files. Re-download the zip and unzip to the installed folder.

Thanks! It seems to be playing fine. The graphic images are missing from the "events" windows that you get each season the first time you click on a country. (In other words the baby boom graphic of a baby is missing.) I can play without that though. I will have to see how it does once I get to combat.

Combat is working as is sound (I chose Soundblaster), so only the graphics in the event windows seem to be missing.
