Trying to settle something that has been bugging me for a while. Anyone with a LAPC-I that has Monkey Island 2 installed, does the beginning Woodtick theme sound like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09hFwEFL72A
or this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GkcuBfdgcQ

We had a LAPC-I in our i386 PC growing up and I swear it had that human chorus effect in the music in the first link, but everything I've heard since going back and listening (MUNT, even a real CM-32L) sounds like the second link. Thanks in advance!

It should sound like in your second example with the Lapc-1, MT32, CM32L and CM500

Hello,

I quickly made a video and uploaded it. The computer is an original 486 with LAPC-I, so the music is unchanged.

Best,
Harry

THANK YOU!!! That is great, thanks for confirming! Does anyone know what hardware might have been used to get the effects in the other (first) version?

Maybe it’s a Sound Canvas of some sort in CM-32L mode… It feels like that

It's not a Sound Canvas, sounds much better - but it could well be a Kurzweil K2000, as Michael Land used that at the time.

The choir sounds reasonably like Mixed Choir, for one. Overall it has that "CD produced" sound of ROMplers from the era like the Roland JV-1080 (but I don't think it is this one), and the Kurzweil K2000. Dynamix used both of those synths as well during their 90/00's CD audio scores, as an aside.

Apparently it was an MP3 conversion by someone that goes by the handle "Laserschwert" using soundfonts in the early 2000s. They also reference "Highland MIDIs" so it's possible there's a version of the MIDI files that have additional voices from Highland Productions

That is really fascinating. It looks like that discussion thread is quite old and I can't even make a username on that forum 🙁 The search continues! I swear when I had our family i386 with a LAPC-i it sounded like that, but clearly someone already posted what it sounds like on their LAPC-i so I am flummoxed. Would different control or pcm rom versions make a difference??

Not that much of a difference, it would be 98%+ similar
