Thank you , good luck to you as well.

The pc you presented above is extremly late win 98. i have something similar , another pc , with socket 462 , amd athlon xp at 1.4 ghz , 512 ram and a 4200 ti. i will make another topic for that one as well when i have time. however , i am running win me on that one.

I think , past 2 ghz , you won t really see a difference in win 9x , however , socket 462 is a brilliant choice because you can go either 9x or xp. i chose win9x because i also have a monster xp machine.

monitor wise , i use a dell fp 2007 , native 4:3 and 1600x1200....

Yeah, that ended up being the goal. I wanted a Win 98 system, still with full driver support, where I would have little to no issues running any software made for Win 98. 😀

Honestly, I have little interest in building anything past Win 98. From XP onward, I'll just run it on my modern system or on a VM if I really want to do so, but there's not much for XP or later I'm interested in that you can't get to run on a modern machine. Now, if I had more room for classic builds, I might think differently, but I have limited space in my little apartment.

I use a Dell LCD as well, not sure on the year, early 2000's. Works great for both my DOS and Win98 system. I just switch between them using a VGA source selector.

do have a few sound cards... A yamaha 724 hardware opl chip... Very fancy... I have a maestro 2, I have a Audigy 2 zs and I have a sound blaster live, and those are the ones I can remember now...

I went with the ess solo because of best in class compatibility and also because I had one back in the day, so more nostalgia than reason.

Both the Audigy 2 or Live have Win98 drivers and would cover EAX.
Fully agree nostalgia is what's most important but no need to remove the ESS Solo, Windows supports multiple PCI soundcards.
and I wouldn't even bother setting up the Creative card for dos use.

I would say you are right.... win 9x era was the one that i remember the most from childhood. It was also the era when win9x was unstable and hat to reinstall once in a while , windows would throw random errors and bsods , etc... but it s because of win 9x we learned computers , we learned to go around problems and we learned how to fix pc's.

When win xp shown up on the market , it was a revolution and was stable and worked without any issues... I rememeber , having to upgrade my pc so i can run win xp without issues.... i was so happy when i did... because of this 2 eras i have multiple retro pc s... 2x win 9x and 2x win xp 32 bit , one from 2004 and another from 2008...

A few more pics of the build, the motherboard was recapped and washed. Basically, it s brand new now.

What is the memory performance in Sisoft Sandra 2003? I wonder if BIOS configures the VIA 694X chipset correctly.

never checked, will do at some point , when a little bit more time.

the pc runs normal i would say. all the games installed are working at max except morrowind. morrowind is not that smooth at 1600x1200 with everything max... runs ok at 1024x768. i think morrowind was a little bit ahead of it s time...
