Huh, I dunno why I thought it had a mic. Maybe I was thinking of the NDS or something.

I'll try it with a headset later, looks like a regular jack. It's the same controller I'd used on my other machine, so no other controllers unfortunately. But that machine is from '98 and the t40 is from like 2003.

Confirmed, audio through a headset plugged into the dualshock 4 works. This is very silly.

It's quite amazing that this also works with DOS games. I can confirm that these work:

Lion King
Doom 2
Jazz Jackrabbit
Commander Keen 4
Rayman
MDK

The only thing is that I'd like to use the d-pad for moving instead of the thumbstick. Does anybody know if they can be swapped? Perhaps editing the driver or using a 3rd party tool?

hello, everybody!
i dont ever post to threads on the internet, but i came across something that seems like it would be of interest to people on this thread and it seemed like a FAIRLY recent thread, so i decided to knock the dust off this one.

i took a serious deep-dive into win98se gaming this year and have experimented with several controller setups. I also noticed a lack of options for retro pc gamers on the interwebs. i forget what thread i was reading, but it was just 1 short messsage by 1 person commenting on a similar post about this 8bitdo adapter and that was the only time i ever read anyone even mention it. i stumbled across quite a nice wireless pairing between the 8bitdo USB Wireless Adapter 2 and an OEM Xbox one controller (bluetooth model). it actually works! You'll want to make sure you have usb 2.0, at a bare minimum. its also a little finnicky to get the two devices to handshake, but once they do and you eventually get it connected, youre golden! you can turn off the controller (pull batteries out 🤣) and turn it back on and it resyncs with no issue. You can unplug the dongle with the controller on and replug it and it resyncs again. i was blown away last night when i discovered this. i used JoyToKey to bind my controller to mouse and keyboard inputs, dialed my deadzone up to 15 (for the movement stick mainly), and i was playing halflife and quake 2 on a windows 98 pc with a modern xbox wireless controller.
So getting them to handshake was tricky, and i still havent figured out the exact method that works for me. i just installed whatever drivers for the dongle i got from the good ol' win98se cd. once the dongle is installed and plugged it, getting the controller and the dongle to "see" each other isnt too bad, but obviously this wasnt designed for win98. pair them like you normally would with most modern controllers. youll feel a vibration, i believe. you should see something pop up in "gaming options". if you dont, try switching the input-mode to Direct Input (d-pad left + window button) for a few seconds). i believe it was about this point when i actually started seeing a device pop up in gaming options, but it would pop in and out constantly... here one second, gone the next. i messed around with all the input options (D-Pad L R U D, Left button) + window (back) button. then things got muddier. unplug dongle, replug dongle, controller off, controller on, mess wth input settings, repeat in no particular order 🤣. i havent figured out that part, so i apologize for that. im sure theres a specific method that produces consistent results, but i hope you get the idea about that last part.
in the end, i believe you need to be on Direct-Input mode and the controller will show up as 8BitDo Receiver and every single button and stick registers. i believe this dongle works with switch pro and ps4/5 controllers, but xbox one controller is all i want so i probably wont test it any further. "Great Success"
8BitDo should REALLY write some quick and dirty Win98 drivers for these dongles. i feel like it would attract a new audience to their products.
i dont have a dos environment to test this on currently, tho
