Assuming that the motherboard has good capacitors, a system with a Slot A 800 MHz Athlon is good for Windows 98 SE, Windows Me and Windows XP (32-bit). If you install XP and patch it as much as possible, be warned that some of the POSReady patches (for point-of-sale embedded computers running an extremely slimmed-down version of XP) that were released after XP support for regular consumers ended in 2014 will not work with this CPU (due to the lack of SSE2 instructions).
What motherboard do you have? There are some caveats for different motherboard chipsets.
Not sure what board it is but the text I could find is k7 pro ver 1 n1996
And it has 6 pci slots and isa slot
Only got the pc’s today and this old timer was the only amd one I only had a quick glance and took photos for research before I get a chance to tinker
You have an MSI MS-6195 motherboard, which is a good motherboard if the capacitors aren't leaking.

It has an AMD-750 Irongate chipset, which, in my personal experience, is less buggy than the alternative (the Via KX133). Use PC100 CL2 RAM for the best performance with this chipset.
The quickest way to get it up and running well with era-appropriate software would be to install Windows Me because the Windows Me setup program will automatically install good Irongate chipset drivers from the Windows Me installation CD during the hardware detection process. When using this chipset, I recommend installing Windows Me in ACPI mode. (Make sure that ACPI is enabled in BIOS. Then, boot from the Windows Me installation CD to the MS-DOS command line and run D:\setup.exe /p j to ensure that ACPI will be used.)
(Windows 98 SE, 2000 or XP would also work, but you'd have to install a lot more drivers for 98 SE, apply an AGP-related registry patch for 2000 that I don't quite trust, or experience sluggish performance once the patches have been installed ln XP. That's why I think that Windows Me is optimal for an Irongate system.)
The choice of video card is important. Have you already chosen a video card for this system?
I’ve bought this pc as part of a 3 pc job lot I quickly took pictures so I could do some research prior to tinkering and cleaning and strip down to see what’s there
I enquired about this amd as I’m not familiar with amd and how they compare to intel equivalents.
I’ll keep win me in mind would have to dl as I’ve currently have win98se and xp variants available and would need to find the suitable drivers for the pcs I’ve recently acquired as well 😀.
Lots of side quests so little time 🤣
I’ve got plenty of xp capable pc’s and have 1 pretty decently kitted out barring a suitable gpu for it.
Still working on a decent win98 setup have the parts but mediocre results for it I’m hoping either of the 2 PC’s in the job lot will be a better choice than the shitty dell dimension 3000.
Which old programs and games do you want to run? What are your goals beyond installing Windows 98?
I’ve got a range of games in my collection mostly from the 90s to pre millennium there’s a good 200 games in my collection the older ones are not very fond of xp and took some effort to get to work and the rest of my collection is fine with xp and win 7 as I don’t have anything newer than sc2 and Skyrim.
Some of the ones in my collection are
Lands of lore series, turok, heretic, various star wars , dungeon keeper 1+2, Baldur’s gate, ice wind dale , elder scroll series, StarCraft ,Warcraft mech warrior, and many more.
And what video cards are available for you to choose from?
Currently a new fx 5500 265mb
Don’t know what cards came with the other PC’s yet tho I think the 5500 is the best one of the 3
Turok is often mentioned on this forum as a difficult game to run due to driver incompatibilities. If I were you, I'd check your other 3 PCs for GPUs from 1997-2000 that you could use instead of the FX5500.
(Don't discard the FX5500 though. It's great for most Windows 9x games.)
So, what are your 3 other options?
Another question: Will you run the standard retail release of Turok or the 3dfx version? If you're going to run the 3dfx version, the FX5500 plus Zeckensack's Glide wrapper could work.
