Hello

I recently got one of these "fake" s754 Athlon 64 3700+
https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon% … 3700AEP5AP.html

The attachment 1764452578944.jpg is no longer available

It is suspected to be a mobile CPU repackaged in a desktop form.
The CPU works for me but stays at 800 Mhz (locked x4 multiplier)
That seems to confirm what the CPU world page says.

But i'm curious because i still suspect that these fakes can work at full speed in some situations (for example with a MB known to accept mobile CPUs)

I searched around "mobile athlon64 in desktop motherboard" and found this list : https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/the-mobi … boards.1331016/ with multiple boards listed.

TRW also list some desktop socket 754 that support mobile CPU : https://theretroweb.com/motherboards?itemsPer … 24&platform1=82 but the list does not match the list on the Anandtech forum

Do you have experience with that ? Can you suggest me a motherboard ?

Thank you very much

I think it's unfair to call this CPU fake, it is most likely an engineering sample. It should be possible to set multiplier and voltage manually. I would try various board brands like Asus, Asrock, Gigabyte, MSI - it may work on one of them. If you don't have a board where it works then it isn't really worth it to buy one, just sell the CPU cheap to someone else who can test it. But the price would have to be low, maybe 20 EUR as it may not work.

I used quotes around the "fake" word because i don't know the true story behind these CPUs. With a little bit of googling i found that there were available through multiple sellers at some point (event an Electromyne from Germany) i also found a lot of people complaining about them being stuck at 800 mhz.

One other fact make me think that it could be a mobile CPU re-marked as a desktop one is the printing. It was very difficult to take a clear picture of the markings because they are really "pale".

I used to have multiple s754 boards, but sold them because i was not interested in this socket that much. I have very good Socket A, and 939 systems and this one was too close in perf/release date. I just kept a potato motherboard that have no multiplier control. And this 3700+ CPU ran at 800mhz under Win XP like described in the article.

I got this CPU for cheap and the last owner was 100% transparent about this being a "bizarre" version. That re-ignited my interest. I don't have a motherboard for it yet, but i'm definitely not in the process of selling it for now. It's too interesting to have the opportunity to test it.

I'm very interested if someone had that CPU, was able to make it run at full speed or if someone ran mobile s754 in desktop boards

Using laptop versions on desktop 754 motherboards isn't that unusual. I have a Mobile Athlon 64 3200+ DTR on a Winfast motherboard, and it works perfectly at 2000 MHz at 1.3V.

AFAIK MSI K8N (all variants from Value to Platinum) work with mobile CPUs - I have one with Turion. Another one was ASRock K8A780LM, which have BIOS with mobile CPUs ucode, but it is a bit rare.

Thanks ! I could not find the board but good to know.
There is no s754 winfast board currently being sold locally.

Yes, i read about the K8N but there is no one currently for sale locally. I've seen a K8V SE Deluxe for 20€ here. And read about it as being compatible with mobile 4000+ (https://forum.ixbt.com/topic.cgi?id=8:22237 if the RU -> Eng translation is correct)
I will probably give it a try

Just out of curiosity, how does perform the Turion on a desktop board ?

I had him in the build for dualboot W98SE/WXP - for W98SE overkill, for WXP decent performer. Thanks to 1MB L2 and low TDP total passable quite and cool build.
Only the GPU selection for WXP is a bit limited thanks to the AGP port, but Turion doesn't have much more power to feed the more powerful GPUs anyway.

s754 Athlon 64 3400+ can benefit from pcie GeForce 2xx series. It is CPU bottlenecked but still delivers enjoyable experience for year 2005 games with maxxed details. AGP is not capable of that and ends in 2004.

Yeah, but mine K8N Neo V2 from 2005 is on nForce3 250 chipset, so AGP is only possible choice. In addition, for OS W98SE I need a GPU with drivers for this system, so ATI X8xx or GF7xxx max.

And GeForce 7xxx are only unofficial supported through modded drivers iirc.
A 7900 GS/gt would be a nice GPU for a system like that.
