Would you consider Windows 98 SE the best version of Windows 98 to install in 2025, or would it be a 'community' edition?

When you say "community edition" I assume you mean versions that have updates and other things pre installed.
Really it comes down to use case and preference.
For a Win98 era computer just been used for games I personally don't see the need to install updates and a bunch of old programs your never going to use.
Just base install of Windows, drivers, and maybe virtual CD drive and favorite archive program for convenance
If your trying to install Win98 on much newer hardware that requires things like the Rlowe memory patch or similar, then maybe a modified install would be a nice convenience.
Although I'm still concerned what else has been modified and what incompatibilities that may cause.
Plenty of people love the unofficial Service Pack as it includes USB drivers, kernel extensions, etc and while I don't see the need on a gaming PC, it's their rig and if that's what they want then that's totally fine.

Original Win98se is better for me and older hardware. Best for me Win95B (with ps/2) and Win98SE (with usb).
Just update directx if newer one needed, if Win95b had usb-hid support i probably would use that even more. 😀

Sure, but we will remove it. It's easily found via search engines and includes a copy of Windows.

The problem is, I have no idea what s/he was referring to in order to search, though I do understand your position. Not to worry 😊
