Hi everyone - I decided to start a new post - and hope this may become useful for not just me in the future.

I am currently trying to revive a Compaq Deskpro 590 - which still has its original HDD but the Disk Utility is not working and pressing f10 does nothing. I was searching the web but not sucessful so far. What I found is that these Compaq Disk Utilities were a clever (money saving ?) method to simply put the BIOS on a hidden HDD partition. Naturally - this became the foundation for a lot of trouble in the Retro community who had to deal with broken HDDs on Compaq machines / Upgrades etc. Missing the utility does not render the PC competely useless, but it brings up an error message each time at startup (annoying) There are several topics here on Vogons already (seemingly each model needs its own set of Utilities ?) but I am wondering if there is a more comprehensive source which collects these files for all Compaq computers? Here is what I have found so far:

- there is a Youtube Video which explains well what the f10 setup Utility is and how it works (it is this exact Computer I actually need the Utility from and for). However it does not tell where or how to get it:

- there is this VOGONS post Compaq Deskpro 486/33M and Configuration Floppy Disk which provides a link to countless Utilities - but I dont know how to figure out which exact model and utility goes with my Computer

- There is also a post on VCF https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/com … ro-xl-590.1161/ which links to the original compaq webpage but that link is dead

- another VOGONS post How to install ROMFLASH ( F10 Utility) on a Compaq Deskpro 4000 233 MMX

So - is there any source I missed or any way to get my F10 setup Utility ? - THANKS!

I found the HP page on wayback machine which connects the Deskpro 590 to System Configuration Utility 2.43A as of 21 Jan 99

https://web.archive.org/web/20050106174053/ht … nload/7156.html

That utility is available in the archive you linked to as SP6144, but also the versions don't seem to be linked to specific models as there is a supercedence chain in which multiple versions appear to be updates for the same utility.

Are they listed in this doc?

I checked but I think maybe not - although it is generally what I am looking for. I will give the sp4166 a try first.

Thanks a lot!

It was not only Compaq using this kind of service partition. IBM startet this with some of the later PS/2 series and continued with the 300/500/700 PC series.
It is allways a hassle finding the right disks to setup these partitions but hopefully i archieved all the ones I need fo the maschines I own.

Most important is to start with a clean disk. If the OS is allready installed the installation of the service partition will fail.
