Hi there,

I am looking for a solution to play the MT-32 music tracks from the game Waxworks (1992) outside of the game . The music files are in the .MUS format.

My Goal:
To find a way to either convert or rip these specific .MUS files into a standard format . Currently, there are no high-quality MT-32 rips of this soundtrack available on the web.

What I Know/Use:
1. I am currently using DOSBox with the Munt MT-32 emulator to play the game .
2. I am aware that I can record the audio output , but I am specifically looking for a digital extraction/conversion .

What I Have Already Tried (And Failed):
The standard .MUS files from the game directory do not seem to be standard MIDI files or a universally supported format. I have attempted to play them using several popular media players and specialized software, but they failed to recognize or play the tracks:
* PotPlayer
* Foobar2000
* The Munt emulator itself
* Specific DOOM/DOS music utilities (Though I can’t recall the exact name, it did not recognize the file structure.)
* A music creation/sequencing program (Also failed to open the file.)

My Question:
Does anyone know of a way to play the music outside the game, perhaps by conversion or any other method to digitally extract the tracks?
One of (.MUS) Files :

Thank you for any specialized insight you can provide!

I found a solution myself. I replace the game music one by one with the game's intro music (name) and then it becomes easier to record using munt.

You can also listen to the music in the Hoot sound hardware emulator

Win 11 - Intel i7-1360p - 32 GB - Intel Iris Xe - Cubilux 7.1 USB

No, it doesn't play mus files.

Was that Finale Notepad? There was some discussion about going MUS to MusicXML to MIDI via Finale Notepad and MuseScore for old MUS files, apparently Finale is the originator of the MUS format. If that doesn't open them then they must have changed something in the files for the game. But after that many conversions will it even sound the same? Using the original game engine seems like the best option.

Yes I tried Finale and another program as well, but it seems that only the game itself can actually play these tracks.
The only workable method I found is to replace the individual music files with the intro music (mod7.mus), then run the game and record them via Munt, one by one.
I’m going to do this after I finish the game, because I don’t want to repeatedly hear the music outside of its original in-game context and ruin the first-time experience.
Once I’m done recording, I’ll upload the tracks to KHInsider as well.
