I used to play around with SGI stuff and still have some systems and parts in storage. My 320 and 540 x86 Visual Workstations are more readily accessible but they’re limited to Win NT and 2000 so no DOS or Win 98 gaming on them.
I picked up a SGI Zx10 (rebranded Intergraph system) based on the Tyan Thunder 2500 (S1867) motherboard.
It’s currently running two Slot1 866 MHz PIIIs, 512 MB of RAM, and a nVidia Quadro4 980 XGL that replaced the old 3DLabs Wildcat graphics card.
Even though it’s no necessary I feel like maxing it out.
I’ve got some 1 GB DIMMS on the way and will take it all the way up to 8 GB once I confirm they’re the correct ones.
I discovered a random appropriate 1 GHz Slot1 processor with some parts and have been debating on whether to just buy another and go the easy route to dual CPUs or try to get Tualatins working.
I already have various slockets and two 1.4 GHz PIII-S Tualatins but am hesitant to get into modding them. Anyone in central to southeast PA that’s interested in doing the job and possibly some other soldering repairs and mods, DM me.
The sound cards will be an ISA Acer Magic S23 and a PCI Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro.
The motherboard has six 64-bit PCI slots, but four (the 33 MHz ones) are 5V only. One of the remaining two PCI slots (66 MHz) will be blocked by the ISA card.
Looking for recommendations for cards that will work under Win 98 and fit the 5V slots.
1. SATA card, ideally one with real hardware raid just for fun. I just realized I haven’t even thought about booting into DOS from a card like this. Alternately I can put an old SATA SSD on the ATA bus using an adapter or try out a SCSI to SATA adapter on the on-board Ultra2 or Ultra3 controllers.
2. Gigabit Ethernet card. I assume I could do a bit better than the onboard 100 Mbps Ethernet but it’s also parts of how much can I fill this box with.
3. FireWire 800 card or combo card that also includes FireWire 400 and/or USB. I’ve got old Macs and still use FireWire.
