Getting Gigabit working on my Sun Enterprise 3000

Hello,

i can't get the gigabit-interface get working on my E3000.
prtdiag lists is, dmesg lists it, but ifconfig fails.

Some sun experts here?

This looks like Solaris - which version are you running?

My Sun/Solaris knowledge is a generation or two older than this (Solaris 2.5 - 9 on an SS20 mainly, with brief detours to early SPARC systems and some PCI-based workstations (Ultra 5) a very long time ago). I do recall Solaris being pretty touchy regarding its network config.

A couple of suggestions:
- driver in wrong directory: https://forums.oracle.com/ords/apexds/post/if … ng-problem-1861
- issues related to the Physical Point of Attachment (PPA): https://www.dogemicrosystems.ca/pub/Sun/Syste … 003454.1-1.html (though doesn't sound likely in this case)

- check hostname.ge0 or1 (eg https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19455-01/806-1075 … 2380/index.html)

Wow, blast from the past. I was actually sysadmin for an E3000, E3500 and a couple of E450's about 25 years ago.

I think we ran 7 on them at the time. I don't think we had GigE on them, they had the fairly common quad port ethernet cards if I recall.

Is there a driver package for that particular card? I lost track of all the drivers and utilities when Oracle put the pay wall in front of the excellent technical docs that Sun used to host.

I've got a couple of Sparc based systems (one on a VME backplane, one a very late Blade 1500), but haven't done much with them in years so I can't recall if early versions of Solaris bundled hardware enablement packages for most of the standard options, or if it was all additional .PKG files.

Odd that the device is created and ifconfig cannot do anything with it though.

OS is 5.9.
Driver was in /kernel and also loading, but didn't find the interface i guess?!
Anyway, i put a fresh sca-disk into the machine, removed all other and installed solaris 10 yesterday. Everything working.
Had other problems, f.e. was unable to mount CDs, so i thought i should just do a fresh install.

Nonetheless i am curious how to handle such things, especially because i want to know the OS better.
I'm already a linux expert and know how to use Open/FreeBSD, but Solaris and its quirks are another thing ...
