just checked, this is a 400~450e card here (tax included) so it's not that bad... hmmm 😁

Just avoid the 8GB version, it's not worth saving 50 EUR for half the VRAM.

And if you want more options, check this video by Hardware Unboxed. They review the GPUs by price range, and should give you a good idea what's worth getting.

if anyone has a suggestion for a gpu do tell because now I fell in the rabbit hole of specs and stats and I want to get the 5070ti but I cannot really justify the cost 🤣 so I am all ears on this one , I've been out of the loop for quite some time now
ideally spending something like 400e in the end sounds good to me

I was in the market for a gpu and $400US was my budget. I narrowed it down to either the Radeon 9600XT 16GB (~380) or the GeForce RTX5060Ti 16GB (~430). The 5060Ti is a little faster and a little more expensive, plus has better RT and upscaling performance. Either of those would be a great upgrade.

I ended up getting a 5070Ti for my son at MSRP (~750). He will give me his 4070 12GB and $400. He gets a 50% upgrade for $400 and I get a 50% upgrade for $400. The 4070 is a faster card for me than either the 906oXT or the 5060Ti, so it was a win-win for the two of us.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

I agree 100%.

Here is a chart a made up when trying to decide. The cost was determined by price checking between Newegg and Amazon and is specific to my location. The average FPS was taken from a recent comparison at techpowerup.com. The cost for the RTX4070 was what I paid for it a couple of years ago. Current pricing is much higher. And the RTX2080 framerates were thrown in because that is what I am upgrading from in my system.

thanks both of you for the info it seems 9060xt/5060ti is the "medium" card now - exactly what I need
will check local prices and decide which to get

Both are very good picks in that price range.

When I was building my last system, I went with Nvidia because I wanted DLSS, or more specifically DLAA. I'm also very used to their drivers, and I like to customize game settings via Nvidia Profile Inspector. But AMD has a really strong mid range offering this generation, so it's basically down to one's preferences. Also, if you're thinking about gaming on Linux in the future, then AMD is a better choice, due to their superior driver support on that OS.

Completed Tomb Raider Legend, the first game of the first reboot series. Felt like playing something short and light and figured to revisit this one. The good? Music isn't bad at all, I have some foggy memory of the composer winning some award for it back then. But everything else.. this has to be the most aggressively mediocre game I've played in a good while.

The story is dumb, the levels are incredibly simple and the combat is just boring and kinda bad, and there's way too much of it. There are no puzzles besides pushing a box of some sort onto a pressure plate or something now and then, otherwise it's entirely acrobatics and combat. Acrobatics isn't terrible but it's not great either, the game tends to go for cinematic camera angles which coupled with camera relative controls causes annoying deaths. And combat is simplistic and boring, there are a few wild animals but not many so 99% of the time you'll be shooting bullet spongy human soldiers. There are also boss battles and they just straight up suck.

The game also has a wonderful habit of shoving tutorial messages down your throat nearly the entire game. I think it decided to remind me what the goddamn jump button is in the second to last level for crying out loud. And no, they cannot be disabled.

Back in the day I had this for XBox 360 and remember liking the Croft Manor and the last actual level the most, that hasn't changed. The Croft Manor is a separate level like in the classic games, no combat whatsoever, just exploring the manor and finding all the secrets. Easily my favorite level.

I remember liking the next game Tomb Raider Anniversary much more which is a remake of the original TR1, even though it of course can't compete with it. But whenever remakes can. But I think I'll skip over it and go straight to Tomb Raider: Underworld which is direct sequel to Legend and one I've never played. I'm not expecting to find some hidden gem here but it would be nice if it was at least a bit better than Legend.

Thanks for the review!

I tried this on my Xbox 360 a while back, but just couldn't get into it. The controls felt clunky, and the environments seemed kinda bland and uninteresting. I never played it back in the day, so I always end up comparing it to the 2013 game, which is a significant improvement in every single aspect, at least for me. I know the Legend trilogy has its fans, but it just didn't click with me. In contrast, I can replay the OG Tomb Raider from 1996 anytime, and still love it. Same for the Survivor trilogy, well except for Shadow, which is just kinda meh.

Yeah I don't blame you. The controls feel clunky thanks to being camera relative and the game constantly moving it around, and also for having this magnetic pull onto things which I didn't mention. It grabs on things automatically, but it doesn't always do what you want, sometimes grabbing onto things you didn't want from seemingly a mile a way while sometimes refusing to grab onto things you wanted because you were off by a millimeter. All this creates an ever-present slight distrust to the controls, which really doesn't help things.

If you happen to see Anniversary for pennies it shouldn't be the worst purchase in the world, or so I at least remember thinking. I imagine the 360 version goes cheap and you can often get the PC version for under 1€ from GOG which is how I bought these. Just don't go comparing it to the original too much, the levels are simpler and much smaller. One can see it as a truncated crappy version of TR1 with imprecise controls, or as a lesser but still entertaining take on it. I leaned towards the latter, at least back then.

Oblivion
I'm still working my way through the Shivering Isles expansion, and it's astonishingly good. The quests are varied, the small world is interesting, and I actually find myself interested in where the story is going.

I'm still playing a low-level game (level 2), and it feels just perfect; individual enemies are never much of a threat, but two or three at once can give you trouble. I feel like the only thing I'm really missing out on is the loot, since that's all scaled to your level, so treasure chests are mostly filled with useless trash. Even so, it makes the unique equipment you get through quests all the more worthwhile.

I've now put 50 hours into this game, not including all the time I spent goofing around in the Xbox 360 version... and I must say that I have gained quite an appreciation for it. I definitely prefer it to Skyrim in every way other than weather effects (the snowstorms in Skyrim still impress me). I might even keep it installed once I'm done with Shivering Isles, just to pop in now and then to finish up the guild quests and do some random exploring.

Taking a bit of a break from the Souls series. I'll be honest, Demon's Souls just didn't grab my attention all that much. In comparison, when I started Dark Souls 1, I could barely put it down. Yeah, it was that good. But this one, I dunno man, it just doesn't do it for me. I'll resume my playthrough eventually, but for now, it's time for something else.

On that note, I grabbed Persona 3 Reload on Steam, along with its "Episode Aigis" expansion. They were both heavily discounted so I wanted to check them out. For some context, I played the original Persona 3 on my PlayStation 2 back in the day. I liked it, though perhaps not as much as its sequels, especially the god tier Persona 5. Anyhow, I've heard mostly good things about the Reload version, so I'm looking forward to playing through it.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Shivering Isles
Finished! I was expecting this to be a lot longer, but it took me around 12 hours to complete the main quest and some side quests here and there. I did rush through the main quest, however, and I know that there's a ton of optional content available.

This was really exceptional! It's definitely got some of the best content in the entire game, and there's even some minor replayability with regard to which of two factions you choose to ally with. It brings some the weirdness of Morrowind back to the series, and the quests are quite varied. I had a great time with this. Highly recommended!

but seriously, this was the 1st game of this kind so it is not that surprising...
Dark Souls 1 came 2 years later IIRC and it refined the formula further
I started playing DeS now via emulation, I am hooked again

also I ended up ordering a GTX5070 , it was only some 110e more but the performance difference is substantial from what I see so I couldn't help it 😁

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC

After finishing the main game yesterday, I traveled to Kuttenberg for two reasons: 1) I had a lot of loot I wanted to sell. I've already got so much Groschen that I probably couldn't spend it all if I tried. But why not reduce my and my horse's load and get something in return, rather than just dropping the items? 2) there are two DLCs that start there.

Unfortunately, the value of the loot I was carrying far exceeded the amount of groschen carried by all the Weapon and Armor shops combined. So I did my rounds to each vendor, sold what I could, then rested until their groschen values reset. Rinse and repeat til most of my loot has been sold off. I also stopped by the Saddler and upgraded a few of my horse's items. Finally, I had several skill books that I had not studied yet, so I spent one evening reading them to increase my stats a little more. Went to the Scribe afterwords to sell them back. Finally, I decided on which DLC to start - Mysteria Ecclesiae. Here is a summary:

This DLC focuses on a dark secret within the Sedletz Monastery, where you must uncover the truth under the layers of mystery, faith, and fear. Henry takes the role of an investigator to figure out what has been going on in the Monastery during its quarantine. Find out the source of why people have been getting sick and what is being done to cure the ill. You must choose how you wish to go about the information you gain and decide how much you are willing to sacrifice in order to uncover the truth; one wrong step is enough to put you in danger.

I am still in the beginning of this quest, but so far it is very interesting. I prefer DLC where you use your brain more than your brawn, and so far this is pushing all the right buttons.

One detail I love about this game is whenever there is a cutscene including your character Henry, Henry as shown in the cutscene is wearing exactly what he was wearing prior to the cutscene. These cutscenes are very dynamic in that way, and it's a cool attention to detail that I appreciate.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Congrats! The only reason I didn't consider this card was due to 12GB VRAM. Some current games maxed out will use up every bit of 12GB at up to 1440p, so future games may prefer 16GB. If you game at 1080p, then 12GB should never be an issue.

yeah the 12gb is a weird number for sure... but going to 5070ti was out of the question for what I plan to do
I forgot to mention that 110e more was referring to the price of 5060ti/16gb ...
my current monitor is a 1440p one - nothing fancy but probably it's the thing I will replace next as I really want a HDR-capable one

I added the 5070 to my chart and it ends up being 2nd best value to the RX9070. The only potential issue is the 12GB VRAM, which may eventually become a limitation in 1440p, and for sure will be a limitation at 2160p.

Heh, I think it's mainly due to the lack of bonfires and the focus on platforming in some levels. And that maze of caves below Stonefang Tunnel was really annoying to navigate. Also, there's apparently no poise mechanic in this game, so you can get stunlocked even by the lowliest enemies if they surround you. I'll get back to Demon's Souls eventually though, just need a little break.

I just could not justify the cost jump for the 5070ti.... if it becomes an issue I will just lower some detail
at this point I am interested on emulation and mods for games like Elden Ring or Witcher3 that were not possible to use on PS5 so I think I am good

true there is no clear poise system... it is kinda exported to heavy armor and shield stability - but only kinda
there are only a couple of platforming sections IIRC, stonefag tunnel and the descent to valley of defilement.... when you get down there platforming won't look that bad anymore 🤣
I am actually exploring stonefang atm, the tunnel section that leads to the lava river - I remember the level though so it's not much exploring...

Picked up Terminator: Resistance over on the Steam Winter Sale.

So far, really enjoying it! It's not often I get this deep into an FPS, but it stays remarkably true to the T1/T2 universe and I love all the lore. Loads of fun to play and explore! Well worth it's $10 sale price.

Also, love the Commodore PET inspired save terminals! 🤣
