I've been using RockNES Dos and am having trouble using a sidewinder joystick. They recommend VDMSound, but after installing and opening with VDMSound, I get an error message telling me the sidewinder can not be found. Any ideas? Thanks.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but why not use a Windows NES emulator instead? There's even a Windows port of RockNES I think.

I'm afraid I'm of no help on the stick issue as I have no stick hooked up to my PC and know almost nothing about Vlad's gameport emulation. However, I do recommend switching to the Windows port of RockNES (as HunterZ mentioned), known as RockNESX (or one of the many other emulators).

Remember that running soundcard emulation on top of an emulator can be rather resource-hungry. Also consider that VESA compatibility in XP is rather poor (limiting you to 320x240 displays or lower).

In any case, RockNESX (Final v2.0) and others are available for download at: http://www.zophar.net/nes.html
