Hi guys,
You are probably my last hope.
Our system specs is ASUS A7V (KT133), 1GHz Thuderbird, 2x512MB Kingston Value RAM PC133 CL2, NVIDIA GeForce 2MX, SB0100, Realtek 10/100.
System is full stable and works perfectly fine with Windows XP under load. No issues at all!

But after switch to Windows 98 or ME computer goes crazy!
- system install without issues
- via 4in1 install ok (4.43V from theretroweb)
- lan driver install ok
- SB0100 install ok (VXD driver from PhilsComputerLab)
- Nvidia driver 29.42 install ok but after restart system is going to SpaceX Spaceship #modeon and literally blow up, and need to be reinstalled.

Ideas?

1.Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed.
2.Reset BIOS settings. Enable BIOS PnP OS.
3. Reinstall Windows 98
4. Install this chipset driver https://www.philscomputerlab.com/uploads/3/7/ … 21/4in1435v.zip
5. Install this NVidia driver https://www.philscomputerlab.com/uploads/3/7/ … ia_9x_45.23.zip

May the force be with you…

Without non-official patches, 1GB is just too much for Windows 98. Try using 64 ~ 256MB. 512MB should work as well, but try less first.

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Pluto 700 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

No, this is incorrect as I installed W98 on my ASUS P6T SE with 1GB of RAM installed, there are no issues with the RAM size and SIV reported 1GB.

For many years a friend has had an ASUS A7V system which worked with 1GB when running WXP, but was limited to 512MB when running WMe. Recently it's monitor died, then it's PSU and he donated the system to me. What happened next is:

  1. I did a clean install of WMe with no 3rd party drivers at all, it installed with no issues with all 1GB of RAM being available
  2. I installed the Promise driver rebooted and all was OK with 1GB
  3. Next I installed the VIA 4 in 1 Drivers 4.37V for Win 95/98/2K/ME/NT4.0, rebooted, WMe started to load then the system powered down!
  4. I then rebooted into Safe Mode, ran the VIA 4 in 1 Drivers installer, uninstalled them all and rebooted again.
  5. WMe booted up OK with 1GB of RAM, further AGP was now enabled when initially it was not.
  6. As yet I have no idea as to why AGP is still enabled after I had uninstalled all the VIA drivers and assume they were not all uninstalled.
  7. I expect there is a bug in the VIA IDE drivers and provided you don't have them installed then 1GB works.
  8. I suspect the same will happen with W98.
