Or someone (something) else that speaks to him, while mimicing his form (human) to make contact.
Then it appears as he sees the whole universe/meaning of life/future and past as one/ etc.
That being said, I haven't read the book yet (shame on me!). So the meaning is up to the viewer's phantasy, I guess. 😅
In a scene before, the flight through the colours may visualize the borders between dimensions.

Edit: The second movie is also very good, I think.
It's more focused to humanity and more optimistic regarding our future.
The effects and props are also interesting. The tech shown moves from the cold, but elegant 60s
IBM look of mainframes to that colourful, vibrant look of the 80s. Anyway, I'm going slightly off-topic, so I better stop. 😅

There are People that don't want humans going into space. You should ask NASA about this if it is really true.
In the movie space odyssey 2000 someone or something sabotage the HAL 9000 computer by reprogramming it.
Maybe it was that black stone ?

Hope this is not too off topic, but if you watch 2010, Dr. Chandra, who created HAL, says that HAL was asked to lie to the Discovery crew about the mission, and became paranoid. And that was why he killed them.

Plus fun fact A C Clarke has a cameo in he movie, he is sitting on a park bench near the white house feeding birds.

the words.... Nimoy says "Space, we've been there", like 'we' somehow have "done that". sure some orbiting and tentative probes to planets its not exactly done! Like saying "swimming oceans, we did that" after a 1 minute paddle in the pacific near the beach

Many companies ran Novell servers.
It was a big selling point for IT professionals.

Novell had a slogan of “YES” Novell netware compatible on hardware.
I dont know if computer companies and component manufacturers had to pay for this certification?
But Novell was a pioneer in the computer Networking and security realm.

The problem was that they covered up the networking chip with the “Yes” sticker.
If you wanted to identify the networking card so you could set it up and configure it,
You had to peal off the sticker.
