I might be able to snatch an Onkyo SE-300PCIE for a good price.
I would use it primarily for headphone gaming on a “retro” rig (quotation marks because it’s a 2013 machine, but it will run Win7 to play games spanning 2008-2012 or so.)
I understand this card is regarded as the best-sounding X-Fi card and comes with a dedicated headphone amp. It also supports EAX 5.0 in hardware, which is important to me.
However:
- It does not seem to have any X-RAM. I know there are games that use it. Games with EAX I would play on it are: UT 2004, UT 3, Gears of War, BioShock, and maybe Prey. From what I can tell, X-RAM did not turn out to improve performance that much—is that the case? Would I be missing out on something important?
- I can’t find a definitive answer as to whether this card supports CMSS 3D. I assume it does because it runs on the same DSP as Creative’s Titanium cards, but it would nice to have a definitive confirmation. Surround virtualization for headphones is of vital importance to me.
