I've installed a couple popular early Sierra point and click adventure games like Project Iceman, Police Quest 3, Xanth, and Willy Beamish, and it seems none of them work with my Logitech serial mouse.

Some of the setup/install programs for the games refer to the mouse option as "Microsoft compatible mouse".

It would be convenient if my Logitech mouse worked with these as it is the only serial mouse I have, and the computer I'm using is from 1993 and doesn't have ps/2 or USB.

Logitech was relatively popular at the time, as were these games. Were people with Logitech mice really just out of luck for these old popular mouse games, or might there have been game patches or alternative drivers that allowed them to work? (Didn't see anything relevant in a quick web search)

Change mouse driver and test

I definitely played several Sierra games (including PQ3) with a generic serial mouse using the standard Microsoft DOS mouse driver. I would try that or CuteMouse.

I remember the SCI-based games at least having separate options in the setup for MS or Mouse Systems mice, with Mouse Systems being the preferred option if you wanted three-button functionality.

Not sure about cutemouse but I was under the impression the logitech mice aren't compatible with the standard MS mouse driver. A standard mouse driver I got off of a bootdisk doesn't work, and even my copy of Windows 3.1 doesn't work with the logitech mouse until I install the particular driver on the disk it came with.

You are probably correct. MS mouse.com or mouse.sys may not work with the early Logitech mice. I vaguely recall the MS mouse driver being hit-or-miss depending on the exact mouse.

I would give CuteMouse a try, otherwise you may need to track down the old driver (Mouseware?) or perhaps use a different serial mouse.

The mouse works in other programs but only doesn't work in SCI games?

If it doesn't work in all programs, then the driver is wrong. As hinted before, Microsoft driver is for Microsoft-compatible mice. These only support 2 buttons. Mouse System mice must not use Microsoft driver. And they can have 2 or three buttons.
Sierra SCI games support both types. The middle mouse button will toggle between walk and the last action icon you had. It is a nice feature.

I suggest trying the original Logitech driver or the Genius mouse drive and see what mouse type does it detect.

Hi, I vaguely remember that the Logitech mouse protocol is an extension to Microsoft Mouse protocol.
Using a Logitech mouse/Logitech mouse driver should normally work.
