I'm trying to setup a new dual boot Windows 98 SE / XP machine and getting nothing but headaches with 98 SE. Here's the system spec:

Aopen AK77-600N mobo (Via KT600 chipset)
Athlon XP 2000+
1GB RAM (1.5GB installed, MaxPhysPage=40000 to limit Windows 98SE to 1GB)
Radeon 9600XT
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (SB0100)
CF > IDE convertor for drive

Dual-boot is up and running fine and Windows XP is working like a dream, no issues with any drivers.

Windows 98 SE on the other hand, is giving me grief. Main issues:

1. I've tried both the Via Hyperion 4-in-1 v4.56 and v5.24a packages, but I'm still left with these unrecognised devices in Device Manager:

PCI Ethernet Controller
PCI Input Controller
PCI Multimedia Audio Device
PCI Multimedia Audio Device
PCI Universal Serial Bus

The two multimedia devices I'm assuming are related to the Soundblaster, I've not yet attemped to get drivers installed for that as I want to get mobo sorted. The other 3 items though I assumed would be covered by the 4-in-1 packages, but obviously not. Any thoughts? I can't seem to find any driver packages or CD images for this motherboard, just the generic 4-in-1 packages for the KT600 chipset.

2. On first boot, Windows was of course in 16bit color low res. I attempted to install Catalyst 6.2 (from the AMD page for the 9600 series) which resulted in a blue screen during installation (just software bluescreen, I was able to exit out to Windows). So I then tried an older driver from Phil's Computer Lab, 4.15 from January 2006 which said support for the 9600 series, again blue screen right at the start of installation. I eventually managed to force the GPU driver installation through Device Manager, updating the driver by getting it to search the ATI folder that had been created during one of those installation attempts. But of course I don't have any Catalyst / ATI software, perhaps not a bid deal, but it'd be nice to know why I couldn't get it installing properly.

Does anyone have any advice here? I'm starting to think the problem is the KT600 chipset and Radeon 9600XT are too "recent" for 98SE, and always going to be flakey. If anyone can think of anything I can try to get those unrecognised devices sorted in Device Manager, I'd be very grateful.

Strange for sure.
Could you post a good pic of the mobo and give the model of the LAN chip?
It's the RTLxxx in front of AGP slot. You can find the driver for it.

TRW has this:

PC#1 Pentium 233 MMX - 98SE
PC#2 PIII-1Ghz - 98SE/W2K

For the USB 2.0 Controller try this driver https://theretroweb.com/drivers/1660
"PCI Input Controller" is probably the joystick/MIDI port on your sound card
