I'm just replaying the brilliant game Dishonored 2, and I noticed that the in-game pictures (painted pictures mounted on some of the walls in buildings) soon start repeating themselves, as the game doesn't contain sufficient individual images to make each picture unique. This happens with just about every game that has more than a few wall-mounted pictures, and it makes me wonder why games companies don't just add a few post-copyright real world images to make every picture in a game unique. I mean, I'm playing Dishonored 2 on the PS4, from a Blu-ray disc, so I'd imagine that the disc could hold a few more images to make every in-game picture unique.

Still, I suppose you could rationalise the in-game repeating pictures as being down to the limited number of pictures that were for sale at that time and place in the world. Much more annoying, of course, is that we'll probably never get any more Dishonored games, as AAA immersive sims are very rare, due to them costing so much to make, and them traditionally selling badly compared to other game genres.

They're not going to waste texture memory making every in-game portrait unique.

I love it when a game uses landmarks, etc from the game itself in framed pictures on walls - Boiling Point: Road to Hell does this and also various pictures of who I assume are the devs and relatives are used as mugshots in the police station, etc.

One could argue that they should have spent more time on the game play itself but I for one appreciate the effort 😁

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'd be ok with using AI to generate in a game. *shrug*

Yep. We've had procedurally generated planet names and properties in Elite, why not procedurally generated pictures on walls in 3D open-world games? 😀

i'd like procedurally generated in-game "pictures" too although how that would look i'm not sure, and AI generated pics are good for creating lots of "art" but will be the same in terms of loading textures etc as any other image set. I also like games that use themselves as reference - ie has a pic of some in game scene and as wall hanging picture or elsewhere in the game
