I noticed the AWE64 and Live, two sound cards in the Sound Blaster range by Creative from the 90s and early 00s, do not sound the same (to my own surprise). The Live filter cutoff frequency responds different to (key on) velocity when you play a note than the AWE64. So I performed a test to back this up.

I played back 16 short C5 notes with a filter cut off frequency of 1600 Hz and a Q of +10 dB and no modulation of the filter cut frequency. I measured the frequencies at the Q of all the notes using Apple Logic's Channel EQ. The results are in the chart below.

As you can see the AWE64 has a strong response to change of velocity in the range of 64 - 127 and no response in the range of 0 - 64. With the Live it is the opposite, it responds strong in the lower range and no response in the higher range.

I have not a good explanation for this. Using the KX drivers and Vienna 2.3 I can get a glimpse of how velocity affects filter cutoff frequency for the Live. See the screenshot of Modulator properties. It seems that the secondary mapper disables the impact of all velocities to the cutoff frequency above 64. With the AWE64 I do not have access to these settings.

When you think about it, it makes sense Creative changed this with the Live. You do not want velocity in the high range (64 - 127) to change the sound itself, which is what a filter does. So they only applied it to velocity in the bottom range (0 - 63) where it makes more sense in case of traditional instruments. Maybe it was a mistake when making the AWE64. However it means Live and AWE64 sound different. I tried to change the Modulator Properties for my Live so it sounded like my AWE64 but I did not succeed.

To be complete I added the chart with the logarothm for the vertical axis.
