Hi!
Got this P1 120MHz laptop with a locked BIOS (Phoenix NoteBIOS Version 4.05 @1996)
The usual method of typing 3 passwords «3hqgo3», «jqw534», «0qww294e» to get a code for a unlock calculator fails, since the password field is only 7 chars.

The password is probably stored in eeprom, because I saw it says CMOS error, but the password was still there.
Did anybody face the same problem?

Try the 7-char master password: Fujitsu. or Phoenix backdoor password: Restart , cedar, PHOENIX or CMOS
If standard 3-fail code generators and generic Phoenix backdoors aren't working due to the 7-char limit, this is likely stored in a non-volatile 24C02 EEPROM.

You should look for physical reset pads on the motherboard labeled 'G1' or 'CLRPWD' (often hidden near the RAM slots). If those don't exist, your best bet is shorting pins 5 and 6 of the security chip during POST to 'corrupt' the password read process and bypass the check.

Does it boot?
There are utilities from the era that write blanks to the cmos password store.
In that era there was a number of bytes of sram in the chipset/clock chip that were used for things like that.

pentium era might no longer be in cmos but hidden somewhere else like management microcontroller (usually kbc)

I don't recall which brand it was, compaq, ibm, ... but to reset the password on those one had to connect a few pins on the printer port using a wire or make a dongle for it, then boot the laptop with the main battery removed.

Also that first answer seems like a summary from an AI answer. Please do not do that.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Does it boot to a command prompt or better?
The utility should work from there.

If it's stuck at some sort of "os not found" error, you're probably going to have to open it up no matter what you decide next.
So you can always remove the hdd and it should boot from floppy.
So you'll need the utility on a bootable floppy.

I think this has a good shot at working
