I've released another update to MT-32 Editor; version 1.1.0. Please see the download link in my original post.
The application now has the ability to export Cakewalk Instrument Definition (.ins) files, containing all the custom patch names and rhythm bank names from the currently-loaded configuration. These can be loaded into certain DAW and MIDI applications (principally all versions of Cakewalk/SONAR) to enable correct custom patch and rhythm instrument names to be shown. .ins files are encoded as plain text, so can quite easily be manually edited for other uses.
I've also created my first custom MT-32 drum set, with sounds loosely based on a TR-808 drum machine. It's not really possible to replicate the TR-808's fizzy hihat and cymbal sounds, but I'm quite pleased with how the bass, snare, toms and cowbells came out. I particularly like the bass drum sounds, which have much more low-end than the default MT-32 drumset. Feel free to make use of this drumset in your own creations.

After being really surprised at just how much low bass an MT-32 can produce, I put together a short lo-fi/hip-hop demo track which I think manages to capture a much more contemporary sound than most MT-32 users would expect the device to be capable of. Have a listen to the mp3 below, or, even better, run the native MIDI file through your MT-32 or MUNT to prove there are definitely no other sound sources involved 😀
