Is there a known utility or patch that will allow Function keys to work in 90s games? My keyboard does have a load of audio buttons at the top, though I'm not sure if they work. And I don't know if they affect anything. The function keys appear to work in Windows. Pressing F3 brings up the Find Files box, for instance. But I've noticed in a number of games, they don't recognise them. Like System Shock 2, for instance. I usually like assigning F5 and F9 for Quick Save and Quick Load, respectively. I briefly read you can adjust a setting in the BIOS, but I don't see any such option on my system.

I have a generic Tiny PS/2 keyboard. KB9805.

Thanks

The key codes for the F keys are always sent to the game, it's the game itself that has a filter that only accepts certain key codes for bindings. As above the workaround is to use a TSR that takes keyboard inputs and automatically generates a key press that is mappable in the game.

Hmm. So I’m wondering if there’s a toggle option in some games that will accept F keys again…?

I have never personally seen an option like that

I'm not seeing that one in a Google search. Does that work with Windows 98?

I've never try it in fact, but used similar software for Linux.
It seems it comes with "Kernel Toys" for Win95, but also works on 98.

Ah, I see. Okay, I'll have a look for that and see. Thanks.

These sound ideal, though so far the first batch of links from Google look to be dead. I've downloaded one and I just hope it works.

I'm not sure if they've been uploaded to the Vogons driver library...? I'm not seeing them under Utilities or anything. Unless they're under a different name?

Okay, the download I got does work, but I’m not sure if it’s the correct one…? The install only appears to install the clock and seemingly nothing else. And I see no mention in the readme about remapping the keyboard keys.

Okay, I managed to find the right one in the end, but sadly it looks to be very limited on what can be configured. 😕
