Hello again,

I am attempting to setup a suitable client for my windows 95 and my windows 98se machines to connect to IRC channels and I'm having some issues.

I have tried old versions of mIRC (32bit version) and visual IRC '96 0.82a-B and with both I am seeming able to connect to servers, specifically IRC.undernet.org, but whenever I join channels or attempt to message people directly, I cannot see messages sent by other people. I can see my own messages but none sent by others.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? I know you can get these old clients to work just fine but I appear to be running into some kind of issue that I'm not familiar with.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to IRC. People who use IRC will generally leave their client open and not be there to chat they are called Idlers. Also many are bots.
It can be hours before someone replies.
Try the channels with the most people on maybe someone will talk to you but yeah most probably won't.
If you see your sent messages it is working you are on a channel.
I recommend connect to DalNet network more people chat there. You could be trying many servers before you find your "tribe" to communicate with.
I think where IRC is most popular these days is places that don't speak English on completely opposite time zones.
