A few weeks ago, I set up Windows 3.11 in 86Box and installed an NE2000-compatible driver. Everything worked fine. Now I’m trying to set up another Windows 3.11 instance with the same NE2000 network configuration, but I can’t get the network driver to install, no matter what I try.

I clearly remember installing the driver for the older VM a few weeks ago without any issues. The installer even modified AUTOEXEC.BAT and added the line:

C:\WINDOWS\net start

However, in this new installation, the driver refuses to install, and Windows reports a wrong or missing OEMSETUP.INI.

I can’t recall what I did differently last time, and I’d appreciate any help with this.

Thank you!

I tried different drivers, including ones for RTL8019 and RTL8029 with included OEMSETUP.INF files. Here is a screenshot of Windows complaining about these drivers:

Oh! I finally got it working.

I had to go into Network Setup first and enable networking. After that, a list of compatible network adapters with built-in drivers appeared. I selected “NE2000 Compatible,” and Windows automatically installed the driver.

Everything worked fine after that.
