I'm really looking forward to being able to set HID gamepad controls to specific keys. Among the small geek communities I'm active at, discussion about using gamepads in DOS has been growing recently, but the legacy options are few.

If you are just looking for HID gamepad to HID keyboard and/or mouse, you could hook a HID Remapper in front of the HIDman. No idea if both devices work together smoothly, I could test it if there is interest.

Interested that you test it.

Can you test on Batman Forever (DOS Version) ? (Not the Arcade one, the 2D style like Mortal Kombat).

This game have hardcoded controls using numpad only, who is a pain to play using the keyboard (it's litterally unplayable to do movesets)
And sadly as the USB controller is not remappable i can't use it either.

There is others games who have weird hardcoded controls under DOS with same problems.

Just to inform you of another recently-released development. The PicoGUS just had a beta firmware release which expanded it's USB gamepad support and features, including button remapping. To emphasise, it is a beta release, so I would not recommend jumping on it immediately with the expectation that it'll solve all your problems.

I don't have a PicoGUS, i'm using a Yamaha YMF719ES ISA soundcard who suit my needs (true OPL3, SC-55 on the wavetable etc ...) and a ZuluIDE for CD-Rom with Redbook Audio emulation under DOS.

But i will look into the HID Remapper, i've bought the HUB version who support multiple USB HID gamepads at same time and each of them will send keystrokes as a emulated keyboard.
It's exactly what i need to send specifics keystokes depending games.

We will see if the hidman is able to understand that emulated keyboard, normally it should as the HID signal should be standard and hidman support HUB too.
If it works it will perfectly suit my needs and also allow me to play multiplayers games under DOS with USB gamepads.

Does it means that mouse not detected on a reboot is fixed too ?

Turns out hidman gets confused if you move the mouse while rebooting. Should be an easy-enough fix but as a workaround in the meantime just make sure to avoid nudging the mouse while rebooting 😀

I've upgraded and tested again to 1.1.7beta1 since i'm now using a HUB after my KVM. It works great on that update.

So far only got that issue if i move mouse or press a key while rebooting, no longuer randomly now so it's cool.

The only problematic downside of that update are Keyboard LEDs who are all disabled (painful to know if numpad is activated xD), have you an idea where the issue is ?

Yeah it'll be an easy fix, I just haven't had time recently. I should have some time in a few weeks.

Thanks, i will be there to test once it's ready 😀.

Also i'm confirming that adding a HID Remapper in front of the HIDman allow all USB gamepad to be remapped to any key of keyboard wanted (even mouse movements/buttons too).
It works perfectly without any noticeable added lag/delay.
And for gamepad compatibility so far, i got many of them working fine (including Xbox 360 wired controller, PS4/PS5 controllers and PS1 Classic Controller).

So anyone who want custom keybinds for his USB Gamepad under DOS, just use HID Remapper + HIDman and you are good to go.
You can store up to 4 differents mappings (more if you edit the source code) and plug up to 4 controllers for 4 players (on the built-in HUB version) on a single same device.
All is setup from a web interface.

Here the settings i've used on Batman Forever DOS Version (for the Sony Playstation Classic PS1 Mini USB Controller - who suit great as a Gravis Like replacement)

If someone need help to setup his Dualshock 4 or Xbox 360 controller i have also a config for theses controllers.

Thank you for testing, might indeed be a good combo! I have both devices laying around but only very little spare time to play around with them, would have probably taken me weeks to do so.

Why not hook it up to a KVM switch?
