Im looking for more exp/information about the fact using a Graphics Card over a ServerWorks Chipsets.

So im digging into some serverboards that provite fancy 64Bit 66MHz PCI slots. Mostly they run over some PCI-Bridges.
One my current example im using a Asus TR-DLS what provite 2 separate PCI Bus systems. The 64Bit bus i going over a PLX PCI to PCI bridge.
I managed to get a clean install of win2k with MPS Multi as Hall.
All drivers are working and the device manager dont report any conflicts.
As GPU i like to use a voodoo pci (clone) that are able to run on 66MHz so same speed as the AGP Bus.

For 2d anything is fine. Soon as 3d comes into the Game i exp crashes and glitches..
My first thoughts are the Drivers not working with that Chipset. Or a deeper Hardware conflict.

Checking different stuff in Bios let me at the end that ServerWorks Chipset are not really made for using with Graphics cards?

I never got around to running games but running stock 3DMark01 did not cause any errors or problems.

P3TDLE (dual 1.4) and my matrox parhelia 256 pci ("pci-x")
OS: Win2k SP4 & DX9.0c

  • 64 bit / 66 Mhz = 6068
  • 64 bit / 33 Mhz = 5137
  • 32 bit / 33 Mhz = 4377 ( one of the regular pci slots and not one of the top 2 "pci-x" / pci64 slots)

Thats a nice Graphics Card! I see there is a PLX Chip on that board.
Interesting, so maybe only GPUs with that chip work correctly..

ServerWorks boards work fine, just not in Asus TR-DLS case it seems. Could be some hidden issue with the onboard ATi graphics.

PCIe cards via adapter provide pretty decent performance, despite lacking AGP features.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Have a note against this particular board model from somewhere that it may have problems with PCI bursts / write combining (will try to re-find the source). Might try a w2k comparison using an HD5450 or an 8400GS.

a shame, such a nice board. I have an eye on a Tyan Thunder 2500, maybe thats the ultimate P3 win2k board?
2 Tualatin on s370 adapter with 133FSB.
I think with a AGP bridge you save using a gpu for gaming on that chipset.

I think others may have had better luck than I but getting two slockets to work in dual processor was a bit of a chore. I mean I was only doing dual coppermines so doing dual Tualatins you will have to mod the slokets anyway.
