Does anyone out there have the Lifebook P1120 install media or any of the ancillary applications? It appears there was a special-sauce tool from Fujitsu to make a disk for this laptop that no longer seems to exist. And I can't even find a P1xxx series software of any sort.

This one's the Crusoe in particular but I'm not sure that the software package was specific to the model; it may have been for the P1xxx line of Lifebooks.

I'm going to see what other software I can get on there but Windows XP has so far resisted my best efforts. It crashed after loading all six floppies when it tried to access the CDRom.

Although it states it can boot from a USB CDRom it so far hasn't done so for me.

FreeDOS ran from floppy, installed, and then nothing.

Good news for you, I have the P1120 also and backed up its hard drive. It has the factory preinstall data on a 2GB hidden partition and that has a 1.5GB powerquest partition magic image that restores the original OS & software.

I'll dig out the P1120 and see what the process is for restoring it 😀 Then upload the right files to the internet archive

edit: I think they knew it's a difficult thing to get the OS loaded on, the create backup discs thing is displayed prominently on the desktop from what I recall.

That's amazing, thanks! I'm glad I posted as there's no online copy of any of the tools now.

Just a site that mentions the tools and some of the file names with dead links. The use of which get you booted from the site for being a CURL script.

And this thing is resisting my best efforts to get a CDRom working. Although it does like my Plextor, the Plextor's... touchy.

I'm uploading the image now, haven't had time to find the laptop and test out Power Quest / Partition Magic's Drive Image facility for myself yet. To get the files out, you'll need a version of Ghost after 9.0 since Symantec ate PowerQuest and integrated support for PQI files into the Ghost software. I haven't had any luck getting the files out of the .pqi file so far.

You can get it here in a couple of hours: https://archive.org/details/fujitsu-p1120-res … ore-image-winxp

Oh, you've got the DISE zip in there. I couldn't find that either. That should be enough to get this mess running unless there's some weird underlying issue as of yet unexposed.

I believe that the CDROM support is working correctly but it doesn't support an *actual* CDRom in the way we'd expect it to. It's almost like it kicks up the CDROM then spins it down irregularly and needs whatever's taking over to do something. Two different models, a Samsung and the Plextor, both had similar problems. The system couldn't initialize three other USB CDROM drives at all.

I did get Debian and Ubuntu to kick up but they ran into what I assume are problems with an unexpected CPU, that felt like running i686 code on something that's missing some of the expected instructions. And it wasn't really what I wanted to run on the laptop anyway.

I'll leave a note on the results here sometime in the future for the next poor sucker who thinks they'll just spin up one of these with a copy of WindowsXP. This one came with a much more knackered spare that I'll be repairing in the future (also a dead drive) so I'll need it there, too. And I've got parts to compare if something's up with the circuits.

Thanks!

Yeah I had a think about it and decided you wouldn't get far without the DISE recovery software that's on the hard drive too, hopefully it works. If not then maybe there's more in the program files that'd work.

Hmm, it's been a while since I've thought about this thing. The drives are Toshiba I think? If you've got one that's not working and makes a horrific bearing noise, you can get it running long enough to get an image from it by pointing a hair dryer at the bearing to get it really hot, then power the drive up for imaging and it should work as long as it's really hot. If it's the fault I think it is with the Toshiba HD's fluid dynamic bearing going bad, those seem to fail 100% of the time with cold temps making them fail more rapidly.
