I need some suggestions for a good video card to put into a Tualatin system with a 4x AGP slot.

Looking for something powerful to make the most out of the architecture but nothing that is just stupid that the CPU\motherboard is not designed for.

Throw up your ideas!

I either fix it or break it permanently... there is no try.

For a Tualatin 1.4 I would recommend a GeForce FX5800. Lacking that, a ti4200. At a minimum, you should use nothing less powerful than a 128-bit DDR GeForce4 MX.

given the era of that cpu there's a lot of options - you've got the pixel shaders emerging then (geforce3, radeon 8500) and then you have the last of the funny ones (powervr kyro2, matrox parhelia) and i personally wouldn't choose an nvidia given the issues.

Well youve got a few choice here nvidia or ATI

Most appropriate would be a Geforce 3 Ti 200/500 or even a nice stock GF3

A Geforce 4 Ti 4200/4400 or 4600 would be your halo choice cards

Your budget choice would be a Geforce 2 MX series or even a GF2 GT or TI if you can find one at a reasonable price

For ATI its a bit simpler

Radeon 8500 for a period GPU, 9600XT for a Halo choice or a 7500 for the budget option.

Picking any of these normal/budget cards that are affordable would give a good gaming experience only go for the halo cards if they are at reasonable prices.

Hi,

I can also recommend the Geforce 4 Ti series of cards, I had P3 Tualatin system with a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 installed and it was capable of running Doom 3(IIRC I needed to install a fan made patch for it to run on P3 though, and obviously the original Doom 3, not the weird BFG edition 😁), the 4600 may be a bit of overdoing it though, I don't think that even a P3 Tualatin is capable of pushing that card to the full extent of its capabilities.

Can confirm the 1.4 cannot feed the Ti4600 fast enough to get everything from it, but at least it removes the GPU from being the bottleneck and if you can score a good deal on one I wouldn't hesitate to grab one for a Tualatin.

You didn't mention the motherboard. If it's a via based one I prefer ATI cards as I have had less problems personally.

It's a Via board so I'm looking around for a Radeon 8500 - 9600 XT...

Let's see what the on line purchasing gods have in store. WOOT

Radeon 9550-9600 flavor is accessible enough.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

For what OS?

For 2k/XP I'd go with a Radeon 9600 series card. Maybe 9550 if I can verify it's one of the better ones, like the GV-R955256DP2.

For W98, on the cheap side either a GF4 MX440 128bit or an FX5600.
