I did a stupid thing and played Lemmings 2 The Tribes with the intent of saving all lemmings in all tribes.

As you know this task is pretty much impossible specifically for the Classic tribe. Other tribes also have levels that were designed to require exploding at least one lemming (e.g. Polar, Space, Highland...etc).. but they all have tricks beyond the designers expectations that allow winning those tribes without any losses... all except Classic.

I was so eager to find out if winning all tribes with 60 lemmings would lead to a different ending.. so I did it. I managed to find a stupid and tedious way to win these impossible levels. No trainers nor save game editing was involved.. just a plain stupid cheat that is possible on the PC version and I guess on the Amiga version as well.

I have attached my save game where it wins all tribes with 60 lemmings. If you want to see the golden ending, just load the save game then go to the map and click the ark.

I will tell the cheat in another post.. giving you the chance to guess it...

Yipeeee!

So they added a different ending for something that wasn't supposed to ever happen?

Wouldn't be the first time I've encountered a game doing something like this. Though usually in my case it's the developer telling you off for cheating the game.

It's the same ending for winning all the tribes with the gold reward. The gold reward can be won by saving the number of lemmings the designers have set.. and it's not always 60. For Classic tribe I think that might be 56, and Polar is 58 or 59... etc.

So the golden outcome is the same whether you win with 60 all around or less (as long as you get gold reward on each level)..

The game has individual files for each level (LEVELXXX.DAT), where XXX is from 000 to 119. The first 10 levels are for the Classic tribe. It is possible to swap the files to play any level in place of any other level. So it is easy to swap an impossible level with the first level of the tribe.. go to the game, win the level, save, then restore the files as they were.. the progress will persist correctly.

Yeah it's a cheap cheat... but interesting to exploit in those impossible levels 😅 I hate when I have to sacrifice any of the lemmings...
