I get charging that for a total remake since that's years of man-hours. I'd say going that high is risky in this particular case, and possibly a sign of overconfidence. Or perhaps desperation.

What I don't get is doubling the prices of the old games.

I guess they figure they're pricing cheap when Nintendo want half as much again for yet another iteration of Mario Kart.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Faithful huh.

I was really happy when I saw that they got most of the German voice actors from the original Gothic to reprise their roles. Not an easy task almost 25 years later. That alone would have made it a day one purchase for me.

But then reports of censorship and "modernization" started appearing online, which significantly diminished my hype. Rather than buying this outright, I'll wait for the reviews and make my decision based on that.

getting the voice actors is cool!

i didn't know there would be anything to censor or "modernize" (if that means sanitize or otherwise remove character and creativity in favor of 'safe' inoffensiveness)

Just looking at that box cover explains a lot - https://www.mobygames.com/game/3785/gothic/co … 7/cover-146473/

And no, that's not something localizers pulled out of nowhere, this painting exists in the game.

A much larger issue is that Alkimia completely missed the art style of the original - that there even was a style to it, that it wasn't just the low fidelity and tech limitations. It's always concerning to see people who attempt remakes either don't get what they're remaking, or abandon key aspects of what it is that they're remaking... for whatever reason. The aesthetics here are that contemporary flavour of overly busy, soupy and just unclear enough you need paint to guide the player. Not a fan.

It doesn't look like a bad game overall, I played the demo and it was (1+ year ago?)... rough, but not unfun as its own thing. Sort of resembled Gothic in places.

Same here. I've never really been able to explain why I love Gothic so much but I have a strong suspicion that the magic has been lost in this remake - the demo felt like just another blah blah open world game to me.

And thanks to the efforts of the community the original still looks and plays great on modern PCs, so I don't see a need for the remake anyway.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

I'm not buying it if the painting has been removed. 🤣
