Endless Sky https://endless-sky.github.io/
Story driven space fleet combat, 2D overhead. Still developed and they're always adding more to the plotlines.

The Battle for Wesnoth https://www.wesnoth.org/
Turn based tactical game with scenarios and an active group of developers. Also has a good soundtrack.

...Does Private Servers for defunct MMOs (functionally revived with such practice) count for this list?

As long as it is legally free and the files can be legally shared then sure, otherwise please do not post such things in this thread. Ask the mods if it can be posted elsewhere on the forum.

To me, currently free means normally not free. So freeware/abandonware/opensource should not count.

This is why the conditional "or always legally free" is right there in the thread title. It's a list of currently, or always, legally free games.

We don't count so-called "abandonware" because there is no such thing; the term has no legal meaning. The copyright doesn't expire until the copyright expires. It doesn't expire just because a company quit selling or patching it, or even if the company doesn't exist.
