I totally forgot to post what I did.

After watching some videos the best was to glue the sides of the box with hard cardboard.
The sleeve is damaged and I could only glue some paper with vinyl glue and press down.
I ironed it before gluing.

It's not a full restoration but enough to have it on my shelf.

Nice! I haven't played any of the Baldur Gates (not really my type of game), but a few years back I got gifted complete Big Box copies of the first game + expansion, and of the second game. So now I'm trying to get a Big Box copy of Throne of Bhaal, for sake of completion, and don't want to overpay for it. 😜

Throne of Bhaal concludes the story of the saga in a decent way, but it's not really on par with base Baldur's Gate 2 in terms of scope, quest quality and world design.

Similarly, I though the first Baldur's Gate (and its own expansion) was just kinda ok, but not that great compared to the sequel.

I've grown to appreciate BG1 more over the years (though I always loved it). The low level adventure feel, travelling in that world, taking in the sights, the forests, the dungeons etc - even if all you get never reaches beyond something like a talking chicken you then deliver to the next location for half a paragraph of text. Something compelling about that game that I can't quite put my finger on. The writing isn't the greatest, the plotting is lopsided, the combat - especially at those levels - never really takes off until the very end, and never gets terribly compelling even when everything is in place for it to... sort of start taking off.

One thing is misremembered about BG1 and the EEs sealed it as The Infinity Engine Experience, I think. It's that the original perspective is much closer to the ground than these games get presented at currently. At 640x480 and even 800x600 it's almost a TPP game. It matters a great deal for immersion, and is completely lost these days. You throw in more kits and elements never intended for BG1, its feel, balance and gameplay, and the current way to play BG1 out of the "box" isn't really what the devs intended.

I use the original versions of these games, since the EEs don't support EAX.

Upscaled 800x600 (with the aspect ratio preserved) looks pretty decent on a 16:10 LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1200.

Interesting read.
Repairing boxes is super common. From what I've seen you do the best you can and call it a day.

Poster repairing is overkill, they have all the tools to make it look like new.
That's a pro job at a price, in my case wood and stick glue were enough.

I just bought Bloodborne GOTY and the Dark Souls Trilogy bundle. A local store still had some copies left, unused and sealed. Despite already owning these games digitally, I wanted to grab the physical copies as well, just in case Sony ever decides to close down the PS4 store and disable downloads. These particular versions have all the DLCs and most of the patches on the discs, so they can be installed and played right out of the box.

Oh, how much I hated this transitional era, before games fully adapted DVDs.

Installing a game from 5 CDs can be very tedious, also it's 5 dice rolls whether a disc got damaged or not. And the manual is just a sheet of paper with the controls.

I've played it some, the pirate version, when it came out, but my PC back then was very underpowered. I found it interesting, but it's one of those games that didn't transition to digital distribution and became very rare on the used market so once I got out of pirating my games, it was unaccessible.

I noticed that the CD era lasted a few years longer in North America. Many 2003-2008 games/collections use CDs in NA, DVDs in EU.

Don't know about that. PCGamingWiki says the EU version of this released on DVD and the US version on CDs. This is an EU version though. For us 2005 was the cut-off point. Half-Life 2, Far Cry, The Sims 2, KOTOR 2, either released on CDs or had both a CD or DVD versions.
