Hello to all!

I have decided to put one of my pc s in storage... my p3... hence I will replace it with an entirely NEW build.

I have in mind a ultimate / super duper windows 9x build. The ONLY thing that will be a bit newer will be the case... But I have chosen this case because it s beige , already a bit yellow and it s super super sturdy and large. I have pictures of the case... will be fully stripped down , fully cleaned , etc...

As for the build... I would like for the PC to run windows ME as it does away with the dos subsystem loading , it s very snappy and brings a bit of a more modern feel in the way that it looks. I know I will get lots of criticism for win ME , but I already have a windows 98 se pc , fully maxed out.

Motherboard will be the Asus A7n8x v 2.0 deluxe... it s pretty much top of the line nfore 2 ultra chipset , dual channel , etc... btw... if anyone has a 3com win 9x driver for this board... please do share... as it s the only thing that i could not install on win9x for this board when I tested it....

CPU will be the legendary athlon XP 3200+. Nothing more , nothing less... Will par this with a beefy cooler that cand push some air trough...

Ram will be 512MB Micron 400 megatransfers (200 x2) in dual channel mode.

GPU - still thinking a bit... I want to go for a Geforce 6600 GT with 128 mb of ram... as i don t think there is anything windows 9x that this card cannot handle... any other thoughts? maybe you can recommend something else?

Sound card: well... this will be the pinnacle of win 9x cards... the turtle beach Aureal Vortex 2 with A3d2... AU8830... very expansive card... extremely good for the era with real hardware support. Please note that i will not be playing dos games on this as I already have a windows 98 se machine with the ultra compatible ess solo 1....

HDD - 7200 Maxtor Diamon 9 - ata 133

PSU - 500w - CIT with 30A on the 5v rail , specially bought because the cpu requires a lot of 5v amps... i know it s not very fancy , i know it s cheap... but it does have a back mounted fan and that is a MUST because a bottom mounted psu fan would take all the air from the cpu cooler... (in fact... unfortunatelly , there are no more psu's with back fans...)

standard floppy drive , standard , dvd drive...

pc will be built in the next few weeks or so... some components are yet to come... but this is the idea.... I do have the case , will need to start cleaning , etc...

what do you guys think? any thoughts? recommendations?

Looks like an awesome build!

Personally, I would use an older graphics card along side an Aureal Vortex 2. The Vortex 2's driver support ended in the first quarter of 2000 when the company shut down, and these cards were best utilized from 1998 to late 1999, so there will be very little crossover with games that make proper use of A3D 2.0 and games that work best on a DirectX 9.0c level card like the 6600GT, which is from late 2004.

If you were using, for example, an Audigy 2ZS then the 6600GT would be a better combination in my opinion.

There are some features used in a rather limited number of games that only work on Geforce FX series and older (see this huge thread for more info), but if you aren't playing those particular games then you don't need to worry about that particular issue. To be honest, most games will probably work okay on the 6600GT anyway, especially if you use somewhat early drivers, but you may run into compatibility or image quality issues that older cards won't have. A higher end FX series or a Geforce 4 Ti series may be more suitable, but if you already have the 6600GT, by all means just use that and don't worry about changing anything unless it causes you problems. Disclaimer: I haven't personally experimented with a 6-series card vs older cards in Win9x games in many years. This is just what I have gathered from various discussions over the years.

Also, if you want to play later games from say 2002-2004 then the sound card's outdated drivers and capabilities may limit you a fair amount.

One final note I would make is that the CPU will probably be fairly expensive for what you get. All of the CPUs from this generation overclocked to near the same level, so it may be cheaper to find an Athlon XP (mobile chips were popular) with a 266Mhz or 333Mhz FSB and then just run it at 400Mhz FSB to overclock to the level of a 3200+ or even higher. A lot of people did this back then. My old Abit NF7-S 2.0 + Athlon XP 1700+ build is still kicking after all these years with the CPU running at 2Ghz, up from 1.47. 😀

Should be a fun build though! Keep us posted.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Not sure if it's really that important, but that's what AMD says.

Wouldn't 6xxx have issues with rendering Splinter Cell 1 correctly as well? Too fast and new for me even outside of that particular game, but depends on what you'll be playing, ultimately.

I'm not a fan of GF6 for W98 either. It's not about the features it doesn't support, it's about the games that won't work with the drivers it's supported by. A lot of pre-2001 games glitch out or won't start up at all with drivers more recent then 56.64. And you need more recent drivers for a 6600GT than that. At least 66.94.
