I keep getting the error "Cannot download file because the source file could be read" when I try to download it...

Do you have it installed and are able to host it somewhere?

I wasn't sure if giving link to the file will work directly or not... but you can browse to the file (among others) from here : https://web.archive.org/web/20220507202322/ht … X4EVER/GOODIES/

So what could I possibly be doing wrong?

Who knows. Modified windows media? Corrupted install files?

Sadly, this didn't work either. 🙁

Well I've tried multiple Windows 98 CDs I have and even Quick Install, and they all have problems.
This PC uses SATA for the hard drive, and the only other SATA device I have on hand is an SSD, and that fairs even worse, as I probably should have expected...

I did notice when making a backup that 2MB of the hard drive is "unreadable". I'll try and get another HDD to see if that works...

...I have a defective stick of RAM.

Tiido suggested I try memtest on another forum, and noticed that I kept getting errors. As suggested by the internet, I removed one stick of ram and now it was going through without problems. Inserted it again, errors again, removed it again, and no errors.

So I'll be needing to find a replacement for that. Seems 256MB DDR1 sticks are cheap on eBay right now, so gonna get one as soon as I can.

Edit: I quickly tested a fresh install of 98SE on this hard drive and 256MB RAM and sure enough .NET installed fine, as did the programs that rely on it.

Thanks for the help, everyone

Gonna revive this real quick, because I'm once again having an issue. This time just with the Protoweb browser. CircusPals works just fine.

I'm still on the one working stick of ram, which is still passing memtest. I also installed a Windows XP partition on this PC, and on there, the browser works fine.

On Windows 98, however, I get this when I start it:

The attachment protowebwin98error.png is no longer available

Any ideas what's causing this?
