I have a strange problem with an AGP Radeon 9600XT 128mb. I recently got an OEM Asus system with a P4p800 motherboard and factory 9600XT. When I boot the system with just the 9600XT inserted, it will not POST and displays nothing. The fans spin at maximum speed forever.
However, when I also insert a PCI GPU and set the GPU priority to PCI / AGP, it will actually POST and display the boot image on the PCI card. Within Windows XP, the 9600XT then works perfectly as a display out and even doing 3D stuff like 3Dmark 2005.
I tried another AGP card (Radeon 128 Ultra) and it worked fine for POST on this motherboard. I have also tried to clean both the 9600XT and AGP slot with contact cleaner, but it did not help.
For the record, the first time I turned the computer on, the GPU did actually work by itself, so I'm thinking that some component on the card has failed.

Has anybody had a similar issue?

If you reflash the card it will probably POST again by itself, the video bios is what is used to initialise the card at startup. You should be able to flash the card while using a PCI video card to see what you are doing.

I forgot to say this, but I did reflash the 9600XT with a similar VBIOS from Techpowerup that also uses the same VRAM. It's possible that it was not the right VBIOS? I used this: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/280/ati-9 … -samsung-031113

Have you tested the card in a different motherboard?

I was actually able to get the card POSTing by flashing a Powercolor 9600XT Samsung BIOS. For some reason, none of the ATI branded BIOSes worked.
The card is now able to be used as a boot device and within Windows.
