Hello vogons. After considerable searching and testing I've come across a working Dune II source port with modern controls (multiple unit selection, rally points for factories and so on). The port in question is Dune Legacy, and while the lastest build of the game requires modern(ish) operating systems, the following versions work perfectly on an unmodified (no kernelEX, no modifications) copy of Windows 98 Second Edition installation:
- 0.93.2
- 0.96
- 0.96.1
- 0.96.2 (latest win9x compatible version and the most playable one).
Test machine:
- 1100Mhz Pentium III SL5QW, MSI master slotket
- Abit BH6 i440 board
- Asus Geforce 3 Ti200
- 256Mb of SDRAM -Creative AWE64 sound card
- Windows 98 Second Edition, Direct X 8.1, Detonator 43.29
To get 0.93.2 going on win98 I had to install .dot net framework 1.1 for windows 9x witch you can get here: http://www.win3x.org/win3board/viewtopic.php? … =27578&view=min BUT before going to the hassle of trying out 0.93.2, please note that it a test version. Campaigns don't work correctly, none of the Ordos missions load correctly (ordos don't work in skirmish either for that matter) and unit balance is very off.
For version 0.96 to 0.96.2 I had to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Runtime for win9x witch you can get from here: http://www.win3x.org/win3board/viewtopic.php? … =26227&view=min After that, the game will launch, but will ask for the original game's data files (.pak files). I used files from my Dune II 1.07 copy and it worked perfectly. Just place them in your windows folder under drive:\Windows\Application Data\Dune Legacy\Data folder - a folder that Dune Legacy 0.96 will automatically create on first launch.
Version 0.96.2 is closest to release in both look and functionality. It supports a plethora of resolutions as well as scaling or "zoom" so you can for example play it at 640x480 with 2x zoom to get the same scaling as the original game, although the UI will be different. Campaign works - I haven't completed any of the campaigns on this version but I started the Ordos one and got up to mission 4 with no issues.
Version 0.96 is closer to 0.93.2 in look and feel. The others are somewhere in between.
You can download all versions on Dune Legacy sourceforce page here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dunelegacy/
I'll also attack a few zip files in this thread since the old versions might go missing in the future:
I am in no way associated with the Dune Legacy team - I'm just a Dune II fan that wants to play the game on vintage systems - with a modern tweak.
I'd really love for this to be ported to real DOS, but I'm not sure this is possible - I don't have the skills to do it (no programming skill whatsoever). If anyone knows of a DOS Dune II port with working sound, campaign and multiple unit selection, please share a link.
Have a great one and enjoy!
