Hi I've got Prolink PixelView GeForce4 MX440 but seems like it's dead - my build is GA-7ZX + Duron 1300 - other cards that I have works perfectly fine but with this MX diodes on PC are still, fans are spinning, and there's nothing on screen and also no beep, so no POST. Any idea how to identify what's wrong with it? Capacitors looks fine to me.

Hi,

One of the first things I have noticed when looking at the picture of the card is that the fan seems to be only attached with 2 screws instead of 4, this alone I might simply consider shoddy quality control at the factory line.

However if I look at the picture in this link:
https://www.pcstats.com/articles/1241/index.html
And another that I have found as an attachment at Amibay:
https://www.amibay.com/attachments/img_202408 … 37-jpg.2495812/

The cooler on that reviewed card and posted on that forum seem to be attached with 4 screws, have a slightly different size, have proper cable management between the fins of the heat-sink. While this alone doesn't proof of anything, I would consider the possibility that this card has it originally cooling fan replaced, and as such it is possible that:

  • The card was OC-ed and someone replaced the fan with one that have a higher CFM.
  • The card might had a fan failure which made one of the previous owners of the card replace the fan with another one. (This might mean that the NV18 chip got heat damage.)

Also does the card work in other systems?

Yep I’ve noticed it too, probably old died and that’s why is replaced. I don’t have another AGP mobo for test now, but on this Gigabyte all my other cards like 2MX, FX5200, FX5500, FX5600, Radeon 7500LE are working ok, so I think this Pixelview it’s broken but I don’t know how to measure capacitors without removing then to ensure they are ok, probably I can only replace them. If something else is broken like RAM or BIOS it’s probably not worth it cause I will not be able to replace them myself.

Usually if I suspect a cooling failure I would also consider removing the heat-sinks to check the ICs underneath, however the pcstats article mentions that the heat-sinks are attached to the memory ICs with "frag tape", which usually means the thermally conductive tape that can be difficult to remove without accidentally ripping one of the components off the board.

While there are no visible damage on the capacitors, capacitors can fail without showing any visible damage, so replacing them in an attempt to make the card working again is a possibility, note that the Geforce 4 MX440 was released in 2002, so it might have lead-free solder, so I would recommend setting the soldering station to 20-30 Celsius above the usual. Pre-heating the board can be also considered seeing that it might already have heat damage, so pre-heating it to ease soldering is unlikely to cause any more damage than what already have occurred if the fan was replaced because the original failed.

The MX line of GF4 had plenty of die burn-out cases, particularly ones with passive cooling solutions. So if that card had any overheating issues and dying fans... it's possible the core died at some point... but not definitive. As MagefromAntares says, capacitors can cause these issues but still apear visualy ok.

Since you aren't getting any beep or post code I would recommend you to get one of those PC Analyzer cards, they are rather cheap but they really do good job at diagnosing failures. It won't tell you what exactly on card has died, but if it throws you a code for video card, you can exclude any other component or compatibility issue.

I’ll probably try to test it somewhere with other mobo just to be sure. Previous owner said it worked till the end like 5 years ago when he removed it and was sure it should work, if he’s not lying I’ll bet on capacitors and probably try to unsolder the VRM ones first and measure, cause I really don’t know how to check them properly when they ale soldered. If it was’t this gold factory OC version I’ll probably just pass.

I really don’t think it will be compatibilty issue cause no problem with many other cards in this setup, I’ll try to check it in another mobo, but I don’t think any analyzer card will help me. I would rather want know how to measure this card electrically.

I've had similar goals with some cards... and I asked for advice here. If I remember correctly it's not recommended to measure components while they are soldered on. There are however have a few experts on this forum who could guide you better about that. Maybe @tehsiggi or @zuldan could give you a few pointers how to approach this.
