I've installed the Windows version of King's Quest 7 (patch 2.0) from the collection series under Windows 3.1. The game installs fine but hangs during the opening cutscene for chapter 1. Has anyone tried this version of the game under Win 3.x?

After I first read this post, I looked for and downloaded this game and others in the series. It appears to be a DOS game. When I has my first PC, it had Windows 3.1, and I remember that any DOS program that used SB sound didn't work at all, but I had a nonstandard sound card. Maybe you're having the same problem. Try it from plain DOS.

Hi,

King's Quest VII is one of those games that had multiple releases for different operating systems, there were versions for:

  • DOS
  • Windows 3.1
  • Windows 95
  • Mac OS

The DOS version is one of the more common ones, so you might have to find the release that works on Windows 3.1, with this game it is even more complicated as usual because some releases came with more than 1 version of the game on the same disk, so it is sometimes hard to decide which disk contains which versions.

There is a list on Mobygames listing various releases of this game, but even that list is non-exhaustive:

EDIT:
If you still have the box this might help you find which release you have:

The win3.1 version will work on win95 if you use the windows application compatibility toolkit to change its heap behavior. (It will crash at a few locations toward the end of the game without this fix)

Other than maybe the sound drivers being incorrect, or the video files being missing somehow, I have no idea what would cause an early game hang.

The version I am trying to run is from the King's Quest Collection Series, which comes with the latest version for DOS, Windows 3.x (16-bit) and Windows 9x (32-bit).

The main reason I'm trying to run the game under Windows 3.1 is my Windows 98 system is too fast for the game. It is technically an option with slowdown utilities, but my DOS/Win3.x system suits the game better.

Can you try to run it under DOS? Win3.1 is not as compatible with DOS as Win98.

I had issues with KQ6 under win 3.1 if the display colour depth was anything other than 256 colours, might be something to check
