Who can help me out with this?
I am getting BSOD "Disk Write Error Unable to write to disk D: data might be lost" during games.
System has 512mb ram and sata drive is jumpered to limit it to 1.5gbps.
If I press a key I can just continue playing my game, but it would freeze and give that BSOD a bit later always.
This morning I turned the pc on and was greeted with scandisk and surface test. Surface test froze. And I got the warning about potential bad sectors developing on my drive...
I also get regular registry checker (which shuts the pc off...) and windows protection errors.
Or Windows boot logo loop.
Guess my fresh install from yesterday is corrupt already.
This is with my Win98SE build with Nforce3 (NOT set to "RAID") motherboard and a 80GB sata HDD drive.
The HDD drive is tested with HDtune in Windows XP, no bad sectors or issues.
Win98SE installs without additional drivers so I presumed no issues here.
I believed that the controller is already always in IDE mode. In my bios i can enabled/disable it or i can enable "RAID" (I have that disabled)
Possible problems/solutions that I have found online:
1. D: drive partition size is too big and causing problems.
2. I have to set the SATA controller to "RAID" mode to force 16 bit drivers.
3. I have to install sata controller drivers for Nforce3 (but they are not included with the Nvidia chipset drivers install...)
If this is the solution, I don't know exactly which entries in device manager are for the Nforce IDE controller.
When i check the "Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller Properties" in device manager I see C:\Windows\System\VMM32\ConfigMG.vxd (Does VMM32 mean it is a 32 bit driver?)
4. Maybe PCI IDE BusMaster has to be disabled in the bios.
After a lot of initial drive/bsod problems with a full hdd size of C: I read on Vogons that a smaller partition might work better.
Because I had a lot of BSOD's and scandisk/chkdsk said that I had bad sectors, I nuked the whole install.
So this time I made a 4GB C:\ partition and installed Win98SE on that. I use this for Win98se obviously and some programs.
I then made a D:\ for my games and installers. With partition magic. For this D: I used the full remainder of the drive space, so more than 64gb (which might be too big and cause issues?)
