This is going to sound odd but RX480 8Gb cards are surprisingly still in demand on eBay . .no idea why but they still sell well enough, same for RX 580 8Gb models.

My guess is due to the vRam shortage driving the costs of most current day GPUs through the roof that these older 8Gb cards are now being sought after, throw in Lossless Scaling and FSR and these GPUs can still game at 1080p well enough for many and they still have quarterly driver support.

GTX 1070/1080's still sell for $80+ every day. Newer cards are just too expensive for casual gamers on a budget.

Yeah thats my guess too, they wont get a ton of milage from them but should get enough to get past this ...whatever the fuck the industry is currently going through.

I have a sneaking suspicion we wont be getting past it in the way we think .. but the jury is still out on that guess. Gotta wait to see what Amazon and Nshitter do, though Jensen has already made his move in part, just waiting for the subscription OS service from Microslop and Amazon to tie it all together.

NGL the DIY PC industry future looks rather dark from where I'm sitting, lots of subscription PC services hiding in the dark waiting for the big three to finish the puzzle by killing off what remains of the DIY PC market.

Got a PS5 controller to use with my PC.

I already have an Xbox Series X controller, but the DualSense has that fancy haptic feedback thing, and I was curious how that works. It's supported in FF7 Rebirth for example, so I'll be testing that later today.

Keep us posted. I'll be jumping onto the FF7 Remakes now that the end is in sight, and have been wondering about that wondrously magical haptic feedback. I like the idea in theory, but I'm not sure I "yet another relatively expensive controller" like it.

Well, I played FF7 Rebirth for about 30 minutes. I finished that game last year using the Xbox controller, so I loaded a few different saves to compare things. The haptic feedback on the DualSense is more precise, and you can definitively tell that the game was originally designed for it. For me, a few standout moments were driving the buggy, where the gas pedal gives you noticeable resistance as you push it further in via L2. The buggy's motor noises are also simulated quite well via the improved haptics. Also, when Cloud is running over rough terrain on foot, and makes a sudden turn, sometimes you feel like there's some sand or a tiny stone stuck inside your L2 button, which is pretty neat. Riding chocobos also has some interesting haptics, and you can kinda feel each individual step.

On an unrelated note, I really like the D-pad on the PS5 controller. It's much more precise than its counterpart on the Xbox controller, and that can be important if you're playing a lot of retro games via emulation. Lastly, one big drawback is that improved haptics, motion sensor and adaptive triggers only work over a wired connection (USB Type-C) in most games. Supposedly, there are some third-party tools which can enable this via Bluetooth, but I haven't tried those yet. If you want more info on the DualSense and how many PC games support it natively, this page on PCGW has a ton of info. From what I can tell, it's mostly PC ports of PS5 exclusives. At the moment, I don't have too many of those, aside from FF7 Remake/Rebirth. But I might pick up a few more on the upcoming Steam Summer Sale.

Is that advanced haptic feedback working wireless? I've seen some conflicting info.

For me this would probably be an FFR thing (I put in some hours into the first one and enjoyed it). I own a few Sony games and find them mostly dull. Ghost of Tsushima I liked for a bit, but by the second chapter the formula really got to me. Interminable to play in the long run - and that's one of the standouts. Probably explains why I don't own a Dual Sense, hah.

Might depend on the game, but from what I've seen, in most cases you need a wired connection.

That said, someone recently came up with a hardware solution for that.

Yeah, I've seen claims wireless maybe works sometimes, but nothing conclusive. I'll dig into this and see if it's worth it. Thanks.

Just bought God of War: Ragnarök on Steam. As expected, that game makes excellent use of the DualSense and its advanced haptics.

This is especially noticeable during cutscenes, where every move that Kratos makes is suitably represented. In the intro, he's sharpening some sticks to make arrows, and you can distinctly feel each knife stroke as he does that. Later during the chase sequence, you can feel the snow dispersing from underneath the dog sled. In combat, the adaptive triggers have a weighty feel when you're swinging that big axe around. Pretty cool stuff.

Amazon got me, couldn't resist picking up a B450 mATX AM4 board at $80 CDN. Takes 3g, 4g, 5g Ryzen.

Local market has long had this kind of vibe...
"For sale, completely shagged Ryzen board, used through 5 long years of overheated misery, might clean up good, it's probably just dust, one USB dead, 2nd SATA iffy, PCIe slot sometimes glitches, works perfectly, sacrifice at $150, no low ballers."

I kinda almost expect to see some of these amazon deals turning up listed at $120 next week.

Anyhoo, now wondering whether to go for mid GPU on CPU or mid GPU in slot, temporary. i.e. a "G" Ryzen or a RX560 and non-G or bumble along with a K620 in it for a bit. Can for sure put 16GB DDR4 in it, not sure if I have a couple extra 4GBs and can take it to 24. It's gonna be kind of a "see what turns up" build.

It's a Gigabyte B450M K board but I don't know what revision they are sending me. The last revision makes no mention of any Ryzen below 3rd Gen while the 2.0 says it does 1st to 5th... so anyway if it's taking 1st gen it may just plod along with the Ryzen 5 1500X that's sitting here until something more corey and gigahertzy shows up.

Gigabyte is getting it's first chance with me in 2 decades not to be a turd.... If I had seen an ECS board at the same price I would have bought that one.

Edit: ...

Bugs Bunny would call me a maroon.... I swear my "part number dyslexia" or whatever it is is getting worse. It's a B550M K rev 1.0 and arrived today. No apparent possibility of 1G Ryzen working on it, but some late 2Gs might be persuaded to... however, I ain't gonna buy a CPU on a maybe, so will stick to hunting cheap 3g/4g/5g.

Been reading about the Ryzen 7 5800X3D re-release, do you think I should anticipate a price drop on that in 6 months time? I am not remembering what is the absolute most I ever paid for a CPU, but it's way south of what those are at now. Thinking something like $150 or so was ceiling, I might allow for inflation and raise it to $152 🤣 ... Okay, I guess I'm saying my target would be 199.99

But if it seems highly unlikely that significant drops won't happen. I will pick something up around $100 or so, it's easy to match single core performance and not chase those diminishing returns above half a dozen cores.

Snagged a Lenovo T92P tiny for cheap, machine type 3238. Q77 chipset, low watt i5 3rd gen, got vpro I think. Came without a HDD installed and missing the SATA cable and power cable for it (From the motherboard) so I have to figure out the pinout of the motherboard power header. It's some tight pitch like 0.05 or smaller.

Not sure what job it is destined for yet. Wanted to mess around with a miniPC for ages, but this one avoids atom nonsense at least. Might end up in a firewall or pihole role. Might end up as a TV box with emulators. Anything you want to expand it with has to be USB of course.

Currently has 8GB installed in two 4GB sodimm. Will probably want to scare up a couple of 8s for it if anything windows is involved.

I snagged myself an Atari Gamestation Go recently so I could relax and play some old-school classics in style, and at a reasonable price.

I've had a few other handhelds over the years, but the older I get and the worse my eyes get, the smaller sized screens are just a pain to see, but the 7 inch screen on this is bright and easy to see. Though, the main reasons I went with this over some other random emulator with a 7 inch screen are the fact it's an officially licensed product that supports Atari, and the controls. All the buttons are backlit, it only lights the buttons you need for a specific game, and you've got every control option covered for many old Atari and arcade games you'll ever need. To top it off, there's even custom firmware for it thanks to the Atari community.

Needless to say, I'm quite happy with it. Laying in bed playing games is very relaxing. 😜

Woohoo, think this is first yard sale computer part of the year. Cost next to nothing so I didn't expect much, bundled in AS bubble wrap. Thought it was gonna be some R5 200 or worse... actually turns out to be an HP 1030GT , which is kinda useful still. Will maybe go in a LP (not the tiny) 1155.

Nice! Is it a GDDR4 or GDDR5 model? There can be a pretty big performance difference between the two, though if it isn't really being used for gaming it won't matter much.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.
