some of you may have heard of the intel 82706, its one of the early 256kb-only basic vga compatible cards and supposed to have no svga extensions beyond standard vga, with the hercules gb500 being probably the best known model. the few cards seen had only 25 and 28mhz crystals, obviously for standard vga modes.
however, i got an 82706 card with a 36mhz crystal on it, what is that for? overclocked 800*600*16color mode?

Yes, 36 MHz is typically for 800 x 600 @ 56 Hz.
Hopefully, the video BIOS on that card provides support for that mode - you should be able to find the corresponding mode number.
